Va. firm to sell Big Apple

NEW YORK - Looking beyond Madison Avenue, New York City has chosen a Virginia advertising agency to run a $12 million campaign to attract businesses and tourists to the Big Apple.

The Martin Agency of Richmond was the winner this week in a 10-agency competition for the job from the city Economic Development Corp.

``This is a perfect time for New York City to be doing this,'' said Joseph Slay, president of Martin's public relations. ``The word is getting out tow the rest of the country that some really cool things are under way - the Times Square rebirth, the crime rates continuing to go down. There'll be strong arguments for both tourists and businesses to consider New York.''

A campaign plan is being readied for final approval in the next two to three months, and it's too early to say exactly where the money will be spent.

Martin, with 410 employes in Richmond and branch offices in New York and six other cities, lists Mercedes-Benz cars, Seiko watches and Marriott hotels among its clients.
