BLACKSBURG PARADE WINNERS NAMED

Blacksburg's Fourth of July parade produced a crop of winners from its tenth annual march down Main Street.

The Mount Tabor Ruritan Club, the parade sponsor, named The Coalition for Family Planning the best overall unit from among the 50 entries. Blacksburg Mayor Roger Hedgepeth was Grand Marshal of the parade, which contained more than 50 vehicles, walking units and floats. The 29th Infantry Division Band of the Virginia National Guard led the parade, with a color guard supplied by Boy Scout Troop 44 from Blacksburg Presbyterian Church.

Other parade winners:

Playmakers and Company was awarded best representation of the parade's theme, "Renewing Democracy: You and Me, Step by Step." Boy Scout Troop 44 was named best youth unit.

Special First Place "Blue Ribbon" awards were presented to: Cub Pack 56 (Best Cub unit); Brownie Troop 3009 (best Brownie unit); Ashley and Austin Phillips (best family unit); Mount Tabor 4-H Vaulters (most creative and skillful); Children's Nest Daycare (most original); Summer Musical Enterprise (best musical); Virginia Tech Entomology Dept. (most imaginative); Blacksburg Christian School (most patriotic); U.S. Forest Service (most natural); Blacksburg Sunfish Swim Team (most colorful); Blue Ridge Model-A Club (classiest); and Ronnie Kitts (quaintest car).
