The Security Council renewed sanctions against Iraq for another 60 days Friday after the United States and Britain accused Saddam Hussein of defying U.N. resolutions and violating human rights.
Last week, chief U.N. weapon inspector Rolf Ekeus said Iraq may still be hiding six to 16 long-range missiles in violation of the sanctions.
Iraq also denied U.N. weapon inspectors access last month to military sites in and around Baghdad, saying the inspectors included U.S. army spies.
Baghdad later agreed to grant unconditional access, but U.N. diplomats said they suspected the Iraqis had moved or destroyed incriminating evidence.
British diplomats also accused Iraq of failing to provide information on its weapon programs and of abusing the civil rights of its people.
