New Century decision given much thought

WYTHEVILLE - Wythe Representatives of Wythe and Bland counties and the two towns in Wythe spent several months in discussions with officials of the New Century Council before deciding to join.

Chuck Perry, president of Wytheville-Wythe-Bland Chamber of Commerce, said the localities felt the regional council's long-range planning and visioning would be beneficial.

"We discussed this with both Boards of Supervisors, the Town Councils of Wytheville and Rural Retreat, and the Wythe County Joint Industrial Authority, and there was general agreement that this is a good move for the chamber to make," Perry said. "Now we are in the process of recruiting volunteers to serve on the seven committees which were formed this spring to implement the strategies to meet the 20-year vision."

Wythe ends year with $750,000 surplus

WYTHEVILLE - Wythe County finished the 1995-96 fiscal year with a surplus of nearly $750,000, pushing the county's overall reserve to more than $7.5 million.

The county Board of Supervisors moved on several studies at its end-of-the-year meeting last month, including approval by a 4-3 vote of a $30,000 study on how to replace the aging county jail. The Mosley McClintock Group of Richmond has the contract to make the study.

Also approved was an engineering study for a potential 1,200-acre industrial park.

The board decided against exercising its option on 10 acres of the Garnett Ager property, but will continue its annual $5,000 option payment. The county has had the property under option for 12 years, paying $60,000 so far to keep the option.

Ivanhoe student gets scholarship honor

EMORY - Jon R. Burnett of Ivanhoe is one of three Emory & Henry College students to be designated as 1996-97 Patrick Henry Scholars.

The award is the highest given to a first-year student, and includes a scholarship covering all four years of study. Each student gets a $7,500 scholarship the first year and the same amount for the next three years if the student continues to meet the criteria of the college.

To be considered, a student must rank in the top 5 percent of his or her high school graduating class. Scores on college entrance examinations and evidence of leadership and character are also considered.

Burnett is a graduate of Fort Chiswell High School, has been named for advanced math and science awards, and is a National Honor Society member. He was captain of the social studies team in the Mountain Academic Competition Conference, and won the top social studies student award.

Park tenant wants to build new building

WYTHEVILLE - A tenant in the Fairview Industrial Park is seeking Wythe County Joint Industrial Development Authority approval to construct another building.

Umberger Contractors wants to add a 9,000-square-foot building on part of its property and lease it to Camcar Textron Amsco Products of Wytheville for use in tool and die manufacturing.

The authority is expected to act on the request later this month.
