Tal Light's three-run home run highlighted a five-run fourth inning as the Salem Avalanche came from behind to defeat the Durham Bulls 8-3 in a Carolina League game Saturday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
The win puts Salem (9-7) in sole possession of first place in the Carolina League's Southern Division by one game over the Bulls.
Trailing 2-0, Chan Mayber and Link Jarrett led off the fourth with singles off Durham starter Kevin Millwood. John Giudice's single scored Mayber to cut the deficit to 2-1.
After Nate Holdren struck out, Light cracked a three-run blast that gave Salem the lead for good. It was Light's second homer with the Avalanche since coming up from Class A Asheville (N.C.) of the South Atlantic League.
Blake Barthol walked, Chad Gambill singled and Earl Cunningham walked to load the bases and continue the rally when Pookie Jones grounded out to score Barthol for a 5-2 lead.
Durham (8-8) cut the lead to 5-3 on Ray Nunez's solo homer in the fifth, but the Bulls saw Mayber drill a two-run single in the sixth to give Salem a 7-3 lead.
Mike Vavrek (7-4) got the win, going six innings and giving up three runs. Millwood (4-6) took the loss after allowing seven runs in 51/3 innings.
