VINTON MAN DIES AFTER TRAIN HITS HIM

A Vinton man was killed early Saturday when he was struck by a train.

Raymond Atkinson, 81, of Ninth Street was struck by an eastbound train as he tried to cross the railroad tracks at Eighth Street and Walnut Avenue in Vinton, said town police Sgt. A.L. Corbin.

A police investigation concluded that all of the crossing's warning devices were working at the time of the accident and that the crew blew the train's whistle in an attempt to warn Atkinson, Corbin said.
