AUSTIN, George, (``Shorty""), 47, of Salem, died Sunday, July 7, 1996, in Lewis-Gale Hospital. He was a native of New Castle. He was employed with General Electric Company for the past 25 years, where he worked as a welder in their sheet metal d epartment. He was preceded in death by his mother, Addie C. Austin. Survivors include his wife, Diane F. Austin; a son, Steven W. Austin of New Castle; a daughter and son-in-law, Julie A. and Tony Croft of Roanoke; his father, Frank W. Austin Sr. of New Castle, and a brother, Frank W. Austin Jr. of New Castle. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 10, at the John M. Oakey and Son Funeral Chapel in Salem, with the Rev. Roy Rogers and the Rev. Ernie Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Huffman Memorial Cemetery in New Castle. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Memorial contributions may be made to Salem Rescue Squad

BLEVINS, Clarence Vivian, 78, of Charlottesville, died Saturday, July 6, 1996, at his home. He is survived by his wife, Hilda Joseph Blevins; one daughter, Shirley Moon and her husband Jack, of Scottsville; two sons, Alan N. Blevins and his wife Thelma G ean, of Orange, David G. Blevins and his wife Lisa, of Charlottesville; three sisters, Marie Carey, Imogene Chappell, Shirley Mae Carrico, all of Galax; two brothers, Clyde Blevins, of Ivanhoe, Va., Dennis Blevins, of Fries; 10 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Hill and Wood Chapel. with the Rev. Byron Wilkinson officiating. Interment will follow in Riverview Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. BURKE, John Edward, 47, of Marion, died Saturday, July 6, 1996, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Salem. He was a lifelong resident of Smyth County and a former employee of the Brunswick Corporation. He is survived by his wife, Diane Burke of Blacksburg; three daughters, Toni Burke and Sherri Burke of Chilhowie and Kandi Burke of Blacksburg; his mother, Thelma Burke of Chilhowie; four sisters, Judy Williams of Evington, Sara Talley of Shelby, N.C., Pat Baumgardner of Vinton and Sue Wood of Wilmington, N.C.; one brother, Stanley Burke of Blacksburg, and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, 1996, at Seaver-Brown Chapel, with the Rev. Bobby Blevins and the Rev. Bill Hinton officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery, where military rites will be conducted by Marion VFW Post #4667. COVEY, John R., 85, of Wytheville, died Saturday, July 6, 1996, in the Virginia Veterans Care Center, Salem. He was a retired construction worker; a U. S. Army Veteran of World War II, where he held the rank of Sergean t and was awarded the Bronze Star and received the Purple Heart; a member of the Wytheville Fire Department, where he served for 30 years, and was a member of Wytheville Masonic Lodge. He is survived by his wife, Roberta N. Covey of Wytheville; son, John R. Covey Jr. of Parkersburg, W.Va.; sisters, Constance Suthers of Wytheville and Dorothy Fielder of Fresno, Calif.; granddaughters, Kim Wood and Janet Covey, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Grubb Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Kale F. King, with the interment to follow in East End Cemetery. FERGUSON, Jesse Darnell, (``Bossman""), 22, of Roanoke, passed away on Thursday, July 4, 1996. A graduate of Patrick Henry High School, he attended Virginia Western Community College. Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Morris of Roanoke and Jesse Ferguson Jr. of Newark, N.J.; three brothers, Timothy Morris of Roanoke, and Frank Morris and Marvin Morris of Atlanta, Ga.; one sister, Ericka Napier of Roanoke; one son, Jesse D. Ferguson of Roanoke; one daughter, Andrea Boettger of Roanoke; a niece and nephew, Cierra Napier and Tyree Joyce of Roanoke; his maternal grandmother, Julia C. Williams of Roanoke; his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Blaney of Roanoke, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, relatives and friends. FISHER, Floyd Allen, 80, of Ferrum, died Thursday, July 4, 1996. Born on October 13, 1915, he was a son of the late Owen Henry and Willie Boitnott Fisher. Mr. Fisher also was preceded in death by a brother, Elmer Fisher. Mr. Fisher was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U. S. Army. Surviving are one brother and sister-in-law, Everett and Vivian Fisher of Bassett; one sister, Gladys Weaver of Rocky Mount, and two special friends, Stella Young and Michael Wayne Floria. HAYWOOD, Mary Louise Cecil, 91, of Marion, died Saturday, July 6, 1996, at the Asbury C enters at Birdmont, Wytheville. She was born in Newbern on March 28, 1905, and she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Wallace Cecil. She was a former school teacher in Washington and Smyth Counties. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Marion. She attended Radford College and was a graduate of the University of Virginia. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lantz P. Haywood. Surviving are daughter and son-in-law, Mary Lou and Don Copenhaver, Pulaski; son and daughter-in-law, Lantz and Susie Haywood, Roanoke; five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 8 p.m. from the Stevens Funeral Chapel, Pulaski, with the Rev. J. N. Howard and the Rev. Norman Wilhoit officiating. HAZLEGROVE, Jo Ann Loventhal, 71, of Roanoke, died Sunday, July 7, 1996. She was the widow of Joseph Winston Hazlegrove II and a graduate of the University of Arizona. Mrs. Hazlegrove was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Roanoke Valley Garden Club and the Junior League. Surviving are her daughter, Jennie Lee Hazlegrove of Roanoke; two sons and daughters-in-law, William Perkins II and Jane Warren Hazlegrove of Southern Shores, N.C., and Richard Byron and Carla Fox Hazlegrove of Richmond, and four grandchildren, Elizabeth Winston and William Perkins Hazlegrove III of Richmond and Sarah Casey and Joseph Warren Hazlegrove of Southern Shores, N.C. A memorial service for family and friends will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 9, 1996, with the Rev. W. Frank Allen and the Rev. Carlotta B. Cochran officiating. PRILLAMAN, Thelma Mills, 87, of Midlothian and formerly of Roanoke, went to be with the Lor d on Saturday, July 6, 1996. She was the widow of Leslie I. Prillaman Sr., a member of Cave Spring United Methodist Church for many years and a retired Registered Nurse from Jefferson Hospital and Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Leslie I. Jr. and Dawn Prillaman of Chesapeake and Walter E. and Patricia Prillaman of Midlothian; six grandchildren, Lesley Prillaman, Amy Prillaman, Brett Prillaman, Anna Prillaman, Emily Prillaman and Erin Prillaman; a sister, Pearl Deweese of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and 19 nieces and nephews. He is survived by his wife, Janet Ross Whorley; daughter, Chelsey Ross of Colonial Heights; son, Steven Wayne Whorley of Roanoke; parents, Leonard and Gladine Whorley of Roanoke; brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Carl and Ruth Whorley of Blue Ridge; niece and nephew, Ashley and Jonathan Whorley of Blue Ridge, and two stepdaughters, Angela Kelley of Chester and Kristy Ross of Prince George.
