FIFTH-GRADER WINS MATH POSTER CONTEST

Ryan Naff, a rising fifth-grader at Margaret Beeks Elementary School in Blacksburg is the winner of the first Mathematics Awareness Week poster contest sponsored by the mathematics department at Virginia Tech. Naff's framed poster is on display in the mathematics department commons at the university. It will be on display throughout the 1996-97 school year.

The poster contest was one of the department's centennial activities during Math Awareness Week in the spring. Students in grades K-12 in Montgomery County were asked to submit posters on the theme "Mathematics and Decision Making." The competition was judged by Virginia Tech calculus students. All winning posters were displayed in the food court of the New River Valley Mall. Winners received calculators and Virginia Tech Math Centennial sunglasses.

Winners in each division are listed below (grade levels are for the 1995-96 school year):

Kindergarten - first, Lauren Tignor of Christiansburg Primary; second, Shauna Poole of Christiansburg Primary.

First Grade - first, Annemarie Malbon of Gilbert Linkous; second, Jonathan Bradshaw of Harding Avenue.

Second grade - no entries received.

Third grade - first, Mallory Brame of Falling Branch; second, Sheena Thurman of Belview; third, Aenon Moose of Harding Avenue.

Fourth grade - first, Ryan Naff of Beeks; second, Kimberly Mitchell of Bethel; third, Jameson Brame of Falling Branch.

Fifth grade - first, Michael Reed of Gilbert Linkous; second, Isaac Mitchell of Riner; third, Ashley Vaughn of Riner.

Sixth grade - first, Ashish Singal of Blacksburg Middle.

Seventh grade - first, Samara McMillion of Blacksburg Middle.

Eighth grade - first, Chrystie Stade of Blacksburg Middle; second, Laura Burton of Blacksburg Middle.

Two area students recently completed internships at American Electric Power's Glen Lyn Plant in Giles County. Both Jason Butler and Jason Mullins recently finished their junior year. Their internships were part of their curriculum at the Southwest Virginia Governor's School for Science, Mathematics and Technology.

Butler attends Giles County High School. His internship focused on civil engineering. He had the opportunity to participate in a number of hands-on projects, such as surveying and mapping of plant property. Butler is the son of Teresa Marcussen of Pearisburg.

Mullins attends Narrows High School. During his internship he worked on computer-related projects. He is the son of Mackie and Bonnie Mullins of Rich Creek.

Blacksburg Town Council recently recognized two Blacksburg High School students for their achievements in academics and extracurricular activities.

Michael Shumsky is the National Forensics Champion in extemporaneous speaking. He will attend Wesleyan University in the fall.

Sarah Hendricks is a Virginia State Track Champion. She will attend Princeton University in the fall.

The council also recognized the Blacksburg High School forensics team for being the Virginia State Champion for the eighth consecutive year. There are more than 70 students on the forensics team. However, the Virginia High School League allows a limited number of students to compete at the district, regional and state levels. The following students were selected as the Virginia State Champion team members by competing within their team. The students are Lucas Kline, Tim Williams, Robert Rudd, Jessica Smith, Rochelle Gandour, Kara Mills, Miriam Walls, Corie Brown, Beth Rodriguez, Brittany Clemmer, Michael Shumsky, Phoebe Connelly, Amee Ranck, Kyla Trice, Laura Lentz, John Schwartz, Alan Wieczynski, Robert Woodfield and Ashley Cohen. The team sponsor is Karen Finch.
