June rains delayed construction of the new Huckleberry Trail, but the project to extend the pathway from its present terminus near the Virginia Tech Airport to the intersection of Merrimac and Hightop roads remains on schedule.
Officials say the trail's 3.2-mile extension should be completed by the fall.
This week, the new trail section will be paved from the airport area to the west side of the U.S. 460 bypass. Also, work has been completed on a new culvert built on Virginia Tech agricultural land as an underpass for trail users.
Surface grading is continuing along the trail stretch that parallels the west side of the bypass, according to the project's engineering committee.
Bids to build the second phase of the Huckleberry Trail from the Merrimac area to the New River Valley Mall should go out about the time when the phase one work is completed, officials said.
The engineering committee is wrapping up paperwork regarding land donations that will be part of the trail stretch from Merrimac to the mall.
