POLICE IDENTIFY VICTIMS IN CRASH 2 PASSENGERS REMAIN IN HOSPITAL

The two people killed in a Sunday car accident near Halesford Bridge in Franklin County have been identified as a Hardy woman and a Roanoke man..

Vicky Gail Meador, 47, was driving north on Virginia 122 with her husband, Kenneth Meador, 45, when they were struck head-on by another car, said state Trooper Wayne Stone. Vicky Meador died at the scene.

Kenneth Meador was airlifted to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He is in serious condition in the neuro-trauma intensive care unit, a nursing supervisor said.

Maurice Edmund Ferrell, 22, was driving the car that hit the Meadors' car, Stone said. He also died at the scene.

Mark Anthony Butler, 22, was a passenger in Ferrell's car. Butler was airlifted to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where a nursing supervisor said he remains in critical condition in the neuro-trauma intensive care unit.

Both of the Meadors were wearing seat belts, and Ferrell was not, Stone said.

Butler was sitting in the road when police and rescue units arrived, Stone said, but police don't know whether he was wearing a seat belt or was thrown from the car.

Speed was a factor in the accident, Stone said.

Ferrell and Butler were traveling south and had just come out of a curve when their car's right wheels dropped off the road, Stone said. The car veered back onto the road, then crossed into the northbound lane and struck the Meadors' car.
