BARTON, William R. (Rick), 68, of 5696 Hollins Road, N.E., died Sunday, July 7, 1996 at his home. He was a retired driver for Lawrence Transfer with over 40 years service. Surviving are his wife, Betty Bennett Barton; a son, Mickey R. Barton; a daughter, Trevia Dunbar, both of Troutville. three grandchildren, William O. Barton, Brandon M. Dunbar, Brittany M. Dunbar; three great- grandchildren, Lindsey Barton, Regina Barton, Megan Barton; his mother, Cathleen Gunnett; sister, Barbara Graves, both of Columbus, Ohio. Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 10, 1996 from Oakey's North Chapel. The Rev. Frank W. Feather will officiate. Interment will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. BURCHELL, Angela Elizabeth, 39, of Eagle Rock, died Sunday, July 7, 1996. She is survived by her husband, Clarence Burchell; and two sons, Jeffry Burchell and Allen Burchell, all of Eagle Rock. Other survivors include her mother; father; and four sisters. The funeral will be Wednesday, July 10, at 2 p.m. in the Eagle Rock Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in the Eagle Rock Cemetery. Rev. Mark Hughes will officiate. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

CHEATWOOD, Alfred William Sr., 85, of Salem went to be with the Lord on Monday, July 8, 1996 after a lengthy illness. He was born in Elliston, Montgomery County, Va. Mr. Cheatwood was a well-known athlete in his youth and played professional baseball for many teams in the Southeastern U.S. and in the North also. He performed as a vocalist of Christian music in church and on local radio stations. He was self-employed later in life and founded several companies. He worked in Africa, Iceland, Greenland, and the Orient on U.S. Government Installations and helped train the residents in those localities in the skills he had mastered. Mr. Cheatwood was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Inez Cheatwood, of Elliston; his sister, Virgie C. Wells, of Ironto; grandchildren, Terry Lee Cheatwood and Alfred Conner Cheatwood. He was also preceded by a great-granddaughter, Marcia Dawn Cheatwood. Mr. Cheatwood is survived by two sons, Alfred W. Cheatwood, Jr. and Wayne D. Cheatwood and wife, Doris; one daughter, Jewell C. Bryant; seven grandchildren, Lt. Michael A. Cheatwood, of Virginia Beach, Julia C. Block, of Norfolk, Benjamin Cheatwood, of Roanoke, Steven Cheatwood, of Roanoke, Capt. Mark Cheatwood, Myrtle Beach, S.C., Debbie Bryant, of Charlotte, N.C., and Randy Bryant, Greensboro, N.C.; one brother, Herschal Cheatwood, of Alexandria, Va.; nine great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 10 a.m. Thursday July 11, 1996 at Oakey's North Chapel with the Rev. Thomas C. Clay of Richfield Retirement Communities officiating. CORNETT, Paul P., 81, of Roanoke, died Monday, July 8, 1996 at his home. He was a member of Raleigh Court United Methodist Church and the BPOE #197. Surviving are a son, Jim Cor nett; grandchildren, Jimmy, David, Brandon Cornett and Andrea Bayne; two great-grandchildren, Levi Taylor Cornett and Kendall LeeAnn Bayne; three sisters, Virginia C. Hannah, Troutdale, Mary Jane Lawson, Galax, Kate C. Scruggs, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a very special friend, Jeanette Richardson. Mr. Cornett was preceded in death by his wife, Alma S. Cornett. Funeral services will be held at Oakey's South Chapel, 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, with the Rev. William B. Ramey, Jr. and the Rev. James W. Reynolds officiating. FOLEY, Edsel W., 45, of 408 Oxford Circle, Rocky Mount, died Sunday, July 7, 1996, at home. He was born November 7, 1950, in Horry County, S.C. He was employed by Bassett Furniture Industries as showroom manager at Thomasville, N.C. He was a member of Gogginsville United Methodist Church, serving as Chairman of the Administrative Board. Edsel was also a member of Gideon's International. Surviving are his wife, Debbie Turman Foley; a son, Shaun Jang Foley; his mother, Dothan Foley, Ridgeway; two sisters, Lilly Mae Foley, Joyce Holland, both of Ridgeway; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Glenn and Peggy Turman, Rocky Mount; one sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Tina and David Cundiff, Penhook. HEDRICK, George Phillip II, 59, of Pearisburg, died Sunday, July 7, 1996, in Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg. Mr. Hedrick was born on September 9, 1936, in Pearisburg, and was a son of Ella Harvey Hedrick and the late Edward B. Hedrick Sr. of Staffordsville. Mr. Hedrick was a member of the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church in Bane, and was a lifelong resident of Giles County. He had served as a member of the Giles County Board of Supervisors, Giles County Planning Commission, Board of New River Community Action, Board of Giles Farm Bureau Co-op, and was presently serving on the Board of Directors of New River Management Service, Inc. George also served his country in the U.S. Army in the Korean Conflict and the European Theater. George was a farmer and had been employed at Celco. He is survived by his wife, Sally Litz Hedrick of Pearisburg; one brother and sister-in-law, Edward B. Jr. and Sheila Hedrick of Mendham, N.J.; one sister and brother-in-law, Mary Ella and W. B. Buchanan of Pearisburg; three nephews and wives, Tom B. and Kim Buchanan, Kenney E. and Tracy Buchanan, Phillip H. Buchanan; five nieces and husbands, Anna B. and George Martin, Ella J. H. Buchanan, Sally H. and Charles Stevens, Heather L. Hedrick; Megan C. Hedrick; two great-nephews; and one great niece. HORNE, Mary Ann Flaherty, 34, of Salem and formerly of Fredericksburg, died on Saturday, July 6, 1996, at Reston Hospital. She is survived by her loving husband, Terry D. Horne; and three children, Alicia, Amanda, and Terry Jr., all of Salem. She was the beloved daughter of Patrick and Catherine Flaherty of Pennsylvania; and adoring sister of Debra Walker and Patrick Timothy Flaherty; loving aunt to Melissa, Heather and Stephanie Walker and to John Patrick, Ryan and Katie Flaherty . PIERCE, Everette Mack, 70, of Marion, died Saturday, July 6, 1996 in the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Salem, Va. Mr. Pierce was a native of Smyth County, a member of the East End Baptist Church, a member of the Francis Marion V.F.W. Post #4667, a member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter #39, and a member of the American Legion Post #18. He was a veteran of the U. S. M. C., serving in WWII, and a recipient of several medals, including two Purple Hearts. He was a former Deputy Sheriff of Smyth County. He was retired from the Burns International Security Service as Captain of the Security Division at the Brunswick Defense Corporation, Marion. He was also a farmer for many years. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Pierce, Marion; two daughters, Mrs. Stephen (Amanda) Hagy, Marion, Amy Pierce, Marion; two sisters, Ruth Weaver, Roanoke, Jane Riddell, Dallas, Texas; one brother, Charles Pierce, Smith Mountain Lake; one grandson, Andrew Hagy; very good friend, H. M. (Slick) Gullion. Funeral services for Mr. Everette Pierce will be conducted Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at the Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Mike Sage officiating. Burial will follow in the Troutdale Cemetery. Francis Marion V.F.W. Post #4667 will serve as pallbearers and render military rites at the graveside. PIERCE, Phillip Milton, 50, of Montvale, went to be with the Lord Sunday, July 7, 1996. He was a member of Colonial Baptist Church, Blue Ridge, a veteran of the U . S. Air Force, and was a driver for Old Dominion Trucking. He was predeceased by his father, Conlie R. Pierce. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Missy Pierce, Elmer, La.; a daughter, Penny Pierce, Woodworth, La.; mother, Lois Muse Pierce; sister and brother-in-law, Louise P. and Bobby Bobbitt, all of Montvale; brothers and sister-in-law, Earl L. Pierce, Montvale, W. Russell Sr. and Ann Pierce, Chamblissburg; also surviving are nephews and niece, great-nephews and great-niece. REED, Doris Carroll, 70, of Roanoke, died Sunday, July 7, 1996. She was the widow of W. Andrew Reed and is survived by her son, Berkeley B. Cundiff Jr., Roanoke; a grandson, Derek B. Cundiff and his wife, Christy, Roanoke; a stepson, John L. Reed and his wife, Wanda, Roanoke; a stepgranddaughter, Laurie Lentini, Houston, Texas; two sisters, Mrs. James R. (Connie) Wall, Roanoke, Mrs. James E. (Peggy) Brown, Basking Ridge, N.J.; a brother, George H. Carroll Jr., Roanoke; also numerous nieces and nephews. REYNOLDS, Annie Mae, (``Nunn ie''), 82, of Roanoke, laid down at her residence Sunday, July 7, 1996, and slipped peacefully away to Heaven. She was a lifelong member of Jerusalem Baptist Church and a Sexton for Christ Episcopal Church for many years before she retired. She was preceded in death by her husband, William M. Reynolds Sr.; three brothers; and two sisters. Surviving are five sons and two daughters-in-law, Theodore and Merle Lane of California, William Reynolds Jr., Lawrence Reynolds, Larry and Sharon Reynolds, and Charles L. Reynolds; two daughters and one son-in-law, Carson and Charlie Harris Jr. and Annie B. Bell, all of Roanoke; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be Wednesday, 2 p.m., at Jerusalem Baptist Church. Dr. J. Eugene Young will officiate with the interment in Williams Memorial Park. SHIRES, Leona Rayhill, 88, of Rt. 1, New Castle, passed away Sunday, July 7, 1996, at her home. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Shires; a daughter, Wanda Donahue. She is survived by two sons, Melvin Shires, Richmond, Tommy Shires, Seattle, Wash.; eight daughters, Luella McDaniel, Patsy Zimmerman, Margaret Shires, Carol Shires, Barbara Elmore, all of New Castle, Betty Bostic, JoAnn Moore, both of Roanoke, Roberta Franklin, Lynchburg; one brother, John Rayhill, Covington; one sister, Sophia Weikel, Ronceverte, W.Va.; 25 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at Boitnott Funeral Home Chapel Thursday, July 11, at 2 p.m. with Jim Morris officiating. Interment will be in Paint Bank Community Cemetery. SLUSSER, James Hamilton, Sr., 73, of Mechanicsville, died Sunday, June 2, 1996. He is survived by his wife, Zula Miller Slusser; daughter, M. Catherine Slusser, Richmond; son and daughter-in-law, James H. Slusser, Jr. and Evelyn D. Slusser, Virginia Beach; brother, Walter O. Slusser, St. Clair Shores, Mich.; and brother, Paul W. Slusser, Shreveport, La. Mr. Slusser grew up in Staunton, Va., son of the late Walter and Ida May Slusser. He was a public school teacher at Hurricane High School in Hurricane, W. Va. for one year, a principal in Rockbridge County and Lexington for 17 years, and a principal at Mechanicsville Elmentary School, Mechanicsville for 16 years, where he retired in 1983. He was a veteran of World War II, United States Navy and a member of Second Presbyterian Church in Staunton. Remains rested at Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Road, where the family received friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, June 14. Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 15 at Bliley Funeral Home. Graveside services were conducted 3 p.m. Saturday, June 15, 1996 in Thornrose Cemetery in Staunton, Va. SMITH, Ethel Lucille, 68, of Buena Vista, died Sunday, July 7, 1996, at Augusta Medical Center. She was born September 20, 1927, in Lexington, daughter of the late Steward Wm . Smith and Bessie Plogger Smith. She was retired from VMI after 18 years service. Mrs. Smith attended the Church of God in Lexington. She was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin Leo Smith. Surviving are three sons, Sandy W. Smith and wife, Eva, Tyrone N. Smith, and Bruce W. Smith and wife, Joyce, all of Lexington; two daughters, Priscilla C. Branham and husband, Melvin, and Gracie Darlene Smith, all of Buena Vista; one sister, Bessie Agnes Rowsey of Christiansburg; one brother, Melvin Franklin Smith of Lexington; and nine grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Daniel Duff officiating. Burial will follow in the Rockbridge Memorial Gardens. STATON, Roy D., 80, of Vinton, passed away Monday, July 8, 1996. He was a lifetime member of Belmont Baptist Church. Surviving is his wife, Margaret M. Staton; two daughters, Sharon E. Staton, Linda M. Wilkerson, both of Vinton; granddaughter, Ashley N. Wilkerson; two sisters, Audrey Staton, Beulah Staton, both of Roanoke; two sisters-in-law, Claudine Staton, Roanoke, Frances Staton, Salem; a number of nieces and nephews.
