BARTER THEATRE TO OFFER PUBLIC READINGS

Early Stages has scheduled several more readings this summer, each starting at 8 p.m. on the Barter main stage. Admission is free and reservations are not required, but it is suggested that those planning to attend come early.

A reading of "Almost Eden" by Frank Higgins, author of the earlier Barter play "The Sweet Bye 'n' Bye," will be July 22. It looks at a displaced silent-screen star trying to rebuild her life in Kansas City, of all places, during the Roaring '20s.

"Sile's Miracle" by Sean O'Sullivan, an actor who has done a script about the gathering of the O'Donovan clan at a reunion made tense by the impending death of the patriarch, will be read Aug. 5.

"The Devil in Disputanta" by Johnny Payne and William Underwood, a musical set in backwoods Kentucky, will be Aug. 19. "The Bear Facts" by Jo Carson, combining a folk tale with a re-telling of the Davy Crockett legend, is Aug. 26.
