A LATE GOAL lifts the East to a 2-1 victory.
The West should have known how the script works: Waste opportunities, lose the game.
Midlothian's Kenneth Sykes got the ball from Nathan Dunk to score the winning goal with 4:51 left as the East beat the West 2-1 Tuesday in the Virginia High School Coaches' Association all-star soccer game.
It wiped out a great game by Cave Spring's Andy Newton, who scored the West's only goal to tie the score 1-1 with just over 31 minutes left.
``The ball was down in the corner and I got it from Aaron Brunner [of C.D. Hylton],'' said Newton.
``I saw the far post was open and I shot it over the goalie's head.''
Newton nearly had another goal in the next few minutes when the West had all sorts of opportunities.
This time he received a pass in front of the goal from high school teammate Chris Hewitt, who was a late replacement. But Newton's shot was stopped by East keeper Nick Shockley of Deep Creek.
Blacksburg keeper Ben Pinkerton wasn't as fortunate, although the shots he failed to stop were more the fault of the defense in front.
The East took a 1-0 lead when a shot by First Colonial's Joe Broscious went off the post and Brady Walker was right in front to send it past a diving Pinkerton.
Blacksburg's Nick Kappas was also a late replacement, giving Timesland nine players. Brunner (West) and Sykes (East) were named the game's most valuable players.
