AREA GOLFERS TOP HALEY MEMORIAL PATTISON REPEATS; CHANDLER CRUISES

Joannah Pattison of Wytheville joined part-time New River Valley resident Tommy Graham as the winners Wednesday in the older age groups in the sixth annual Andrew Haley Memorial Junior Golf Tournament at Mariners Landing.

Pattison, a 16-year-old rising junior at George Wythe High School, parred the final hole for a 36-hole total of 152 and a one-shot victory over Mandy Beamer of Crewe. It was the third victory of the summer for Pattison, the defending girls' champion

``I think this course played harder than last year's,'' said Pattison, who had a 161 total in 1995, when she won by seven shots at Lynwood in Martinsville, ``but I'm also playing better than I did last year.''

Graham, 17, carried a one-shot lead into Wednesday's second round and shot a 74 for a two-day total of 146, four shots better than Chris Clark and five shots ahead of Neil Norris, both of Martinsville.

It was the first tournament victory for Graham, who graduated from high school in Athens, Ga., but was registered out of Blacksburg, where he spends summers with his father, George, a professor at Virginia Tech.

Graham, who plans to play golf at Georgia College, tied for seventh in the Haley last year after being disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard in 1994.

In the younger divisions, Bill Fedder from Lynchburg started his round with back-to-back birdies and finished with a 36-hole total of 151 to win the 14-15 boys' title. Ryan Patterson was next at 155, followed by fellow Roanoker Trey Clower at 156.

Among the 12-13 boys, Robert Chandler from Glade Hill won by 17 strokes with a total of 145. Roanokers Jason Owenby and Jason Blake were second and third with totals of 162 and 169, respectively.
