The Montgomery County grand jury indicted a 55-year-old store owner on 10 drug charges Tuesday after police alleged that an informant purchased marijuana - ranging in weight from an ounce to one pound - from the man during the last eight months.
Guy David McDaniel, owner of Elliston Food Mart on U.S. 11/460, was arrested Wednesday and released on a $10,000 bond, according to the Montgomery County Drug Task Force.
The charges against McDaniel include nine counts of distribution of marijuana and one count of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. Each charge is a felony that carries a maximum 10-year prison sentence and a $2,500 fine, a news release said.
An affidavit filed in Montgomery Circuit Court states McDaniel accepted money for marijuana at his business and later delivered the drug at his home. More than once, the affidavit states, McDaniel told the buyer to pick up marijuana from a pickup parked in McDaniel's driveway.
According to search warrants filed in Circuit Court, authorities seized marijuana and drug paraphernalia from McDaniel's home in 200 block of Clay Street in Elliston in May. Items listed on the warrant include small plastic bags filled with marijuana, $6,160 in cash, a safe and triple beam scales. A search of McDaniel's business netted authorities an address book, a phone bill and address cards from a Rolodex.
The task force is composed of officers from the Blacksburg Police Department, the Christiansburg Police Department, the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, the Virginia Tech Police Department and the Virginia State Police.
