The Salem Avalanche knew how to take itself out of scoring situations while putting the Lynchburg Hillcats in them.
The Hillcats scored five times in the fifth inning to beat the Avalanche 5-1 before 1,074 spectators at City Stadium Wednesday night.
Salem pitchers held Lynchburg to five hits, but issued eight bases on balls in the game, two of those in the fateful fifth.
John Dillinger (4-2) tossed eight shutout innings to beat Salem for the second time. He was helped by four double plays that squashed Avalanche scoring threats.
Dillinger, who struck out eight batters, left the game after issuing a leadoff walk to Elvis Pena in the ninth. Pena eventually scored on Nate Holdren's single off reliever Tim Collie.
Salem starter Chandler Martin, who was 10-0 at Asheville and New Haven, dropped to 0-3 with the Avalanche. He surrendered five runs on three hits and walked six in 41/3 innings.
Lynchburg's Sean Walker walked to open the fifth and Freddy Garcia followed with a home run to make it 2-0. Derek Swafford doubled home a run and Jose Guillen added a two-run single off reliever Matt Pool to make it 5-0.
