The Carolina Dynamo made the Roanoke RiverDawgs its 10th consecutive victim Wednesday night, downing the United Systems of Independent Soccer Leagues Premier League team 2-0 at Cave Spring Junior High School.
The Dynamo earned this victory by sapping the RiverDawgs' offensive power. Carolina, a member of the U.S.I.S.L's top-level Select League, outshot Roanoke 11-1, 4-0 in the first half. The Dynamo didn't do it with defense, either. Its offense attacked so relentlessly that the RiverDawgs had to be preoccupied with playing defense.
That didn't leave time, or energy, for many offensive maneuvers.
``We defended well, but we missed some shots that we should have made,'' said Grayson Prillaman, a former Roanoke College all-American. ``Overall, we played well considering we were without two starters.''
Roanoke's Waughn Hughes missed the game due to a suspension for receiving two yellow cards, while Mike Botta sat out with a knee injury. Both are from William and Mary.
RiverDawgs goalkeeper Aaron Ewert made nine saves. The two shots that got by him were the result of excellent ball movement by Carolina.
The Dynamo got its first goal three minutes into the second half when Kevin Sloan scored on a give and go from Michael Gailey. At the 36-minute mark of the second half, Keiran Breslin got his foot under the ball for a cross pass that Gailey headed in for the 2-0 margin.
``They were very organized,'' said Roanoke's Patrick McSorley. ``They made us disorganized.''
