Five pitchers combined to allow three hits as the West beat the East 3-1 on Wednesday in the Virginia High School Coaches' Association All-Star baseball game.
It was the West's fifth victory in the past six years. More important, this was the lowest-scoring contest in the series' 21 years.
Todd Zirkle (Powell Valley), Blair Dehart (Herndon), Eric Schmitt (W.D. Woodson), Michael Bailey (Abingdon) and Anthony Pennix (William Campbell) were the West's pitchers.
However, center fielder Phillip Hankey of Abington was named the West's most valuable player as he collected two hits, including a two-out single that started a decisive two-run fourth inning. He scored the winning run on a single by Dehart.
The inning might never have happened, except that Chad Shaffer, the Timesland player of the year from Grayson County, beat out an infield hit that allowed Dehart to bat.
The only other hit by a Timesland player was a single by Cave Spring's Doug Kenney, who got the West's first hit in the first inning.
Nansemond River's Grayson Craun was the East's most valuable player. He had one of its three hits and pitched two scoreless innings.
