MAROONS LOSE COYNE TO IRISH

Tracy Coyne, women's lacrosse and field hockey coach at Roanoke College since 1989, has accepted the position of head women's lacrosse coach at the University of Notre Dame.

Coyne, 36, will be the first women's lacrosse coach in Notre Dame history. The program was founded as a club team in 1993 by Notre Dame graduate Alison Martin, then a sophomore. The team begins varsity play in 1997.

Coyne's lacrosse teams compiled a 91-21 record during her tenure, won the past three Old Dominion Athletic Conference championships and five overall. Her 1990 and 1992 teams reached the final four of the NCAA Tournament. Coyne, a native of Sewickley, Pa., also was named Division III national coach of the year in 1990.

Coyne's final Roanoke team lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. It featured four players who earned All-America honors and had no senior starters.

Roanoke athletic director Scott Allison said he was sad to lose someone of Coyne's talent and experience, but added he was excited for someone from the college to have such an opportunity. He soon will begin a search for Coyne's replacement but anticipates it could be a long process.

Notre Dame's men's lacrosse coach, Kevin Corrigan, also has ties to Virginia. The son of former University of Virginia athletic director Gene Corrigan played and coached lacrosse at UVa.
