Big Island bosses take retirement bid

All 10 of the eligible supervisory employees at Georgia-Pacific Corp.'s Big Island paper mill in Bedford County have accepted early retirement.

Georgia-Pacific made the offer in May to 1,400 salaried employees nationwide as part of a three-year effort to cut expenses and increase pretax earnings.

The Atlanta-based forest products company said Thursday that 925, or 68 percent of the eligible employees, accepted. The voluntary retirement plan was available through July 8 to employees who were 65 and older or 55 and older with at least 10 years of service.

Georgia-Pacific has 47,000 management and hourly workers, including about 400 at the Big Island plant. The company also operates a distribution center in Roanoke, but workers in that division were not eligible for the retirement plan.
