ALLEY, Mary Johnson, 77, of 1052 Starmount Ave., N.W., passed away Friday, July 12, 1996 in a Salem hospital. She was a member of St. Andrew's Catholic Parish and the Tea Sippers Club. Mrs. Alley was retired from Smartwear Irvin Saks. She was the widow of Ralph J. Alley. Sur viving are her son and daughter-in-law, James Stephen and Edith D. Alley, Roanoke; two grandchildren, Sarah Goins and Joshua Goins; a sister, Winnie Twist, England; a brother-in-law and his wife, William P. and Florene Alley, Lake Charles, La.; a number of nieces and nephews, including Carl Johnson, Roanoke. Funeral services will be celebrated at 12 noon Monday, July 15, 1996 with Mass at St. Andrew's Catholic Church. The Reverend Wayne Ball will officiate. Interment will be in Evergreen Burial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m., Saturday and 2 to 4 p.m., Sunday at Oakey's North Chapel

BAUER, Martin Josef, 91 of Blacksburg, died Thursday, July 11, 1996. Unfailingly responsible, reliable and relied-upon, through the Great Depressions, banishment from home by the Nazis, and two intercontinental migrations as well as several shorter ones. His memory will be honored by his children and children-in -law, Elizabeth and Henry and Barbara, Myra, and Nick; by his grandchildren, Helen and Judy; great-grandchildren, Lucy and Henry; by many other relatives and friends in Blacksburg, Va. and St. Petersburg, Fla., in Picton and in Sydney, Australia, and in many other places as well. COOK, James Morris, Jr. (``Jim''), passed away on Tuesday, July 9, 1996. He was a United States Army Veteran of World War II. Mr. Cook retired from the Veterans Administration Hospital after 30 years of service. He was a member of the Jerusalem Baptist Church and Hiram Lodge #4. Survivors, wife, Lovie J. Cook, Roanoke; two sons, Minister James M. Cook, III, Roanoke, U.S. Army PFC Michael S. Goolsby, Fort Campbell, Ky.; one sister, Annie C. CORBETT, Madge Newkirk , 85, of Blacksburg, passed away Thursday, July 11, 1996, at her home in Blacksburg. Born in Big Spring, Md. on June 16, 1911, she was a daughter of the late Tunis Ellis and Jane Lucinda Rubeck Newkirk. She attended St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Clear Spring, Md., the Faith Lutheran Church in Lehigh Acres, Fla., and the St. Michael Lutheran Church in Blacksburg. Survivors include her husband of 58 years, John Greenawalt Corbett; daughter, Barbara Corbett of Blacksburg; sister, Sara Faith of Clear Spring, Md.; brother, John Newkirk of Williamsport, Md. The family will receive friends from noon to 12:30 p.m. Sunday, July 14, 1996, at St. Michael Lutheran Church in Blacksburg, concluding with a memorial service at 12:30 p.m. with the Rev. Jacob Mayer officiating. A second memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 20, 1996, at 2 p.m. at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Clear Spring, Md. with the Rev. C. Andrew Carr officiating. DEAN, Anna Umberger, 80, of Wytheville, formerly of Austinville, the Bethany Community, died Friday, July 12, 1996, in the Wythe County Community Hospital. She was born in Wythe County, the daughter of the late Edward Bruce Sr. and Hattie Umberger. She was a member of the Bethany United Methodist Church and the W.S.C.S. She was preceded in death by a son, Fredric Wayne Dean. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, J. Fred Dean of the home; four sons and daughters-in-law, Edward B. Dean of Salem, Douglas and Joanne Dean of Stafford, Danny G. and Sherry Dean, Terry A. and Becky Dean, all of Wytheville; two sisters, Elizabeth Jackson of Route 1, Austinville, Lucy Jackson of Wytheville. Ten grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be held Sunday, July 14, 1996, at 2 p.m. at the Bethany United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jerry Long and the Rev. Ernest Chinault officiating. Interment will follow in the Bethany Cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time. HALL, Ervin Blake, 76, of Bland, died Thursday, July 11, 1996 in the Camelot Hall in Salem. He was born in Bland, the son of the late Walter Wirt and Emily Jane Davis Hall. He was a U. S. Army Veteran of World War II, and was of the Methodist faith. He was a former employee of the Newberry Funeral Home, Bland. He is survived by a son, Richard Ervin Hall, Oxon Hill, Md.; a brother, Wa lter J. Hall, Oxon Hill, Md.; a sister, Bonnie Reardon, Westminister, Md.; a host of relatives also survive. A graveside service will be held Sunday, July 14, 1996, at 2:00 p.m. at the Bland Cemetery, with the Rev. Joe Taylor officiating. HALL, James Johney, 75, of Fincastle, died Friday, July 12, 1996. He is survived by his wife, Anna Jean Hall; one daughter and son-in-law, Geraldine and Rodney Lawson, all of Fincastle; one brother, Victor Hall, of Coeburn, Va.; three grandchildren, Dr. David Lawson, of Lynchburg, Dr. Lianna Lawson, of Kingsport, Tenn., John Lawson, of Fincastle. HARLESS, Edna Tawney, 79, of Ripplemead, died Saturday, July 11, 1996 in Giles Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Harless was a retired nurse at Giles Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Harless was born on March 24, 1917 and was a daughter of the late George Samuel and Marie Effie Bolton Tawney. She was the widow of Vivian Harless. She is survived by two sons, Jimmy Harless, of Ripplemead, Gary Harless, of Ripplemead; three daughters, Dianne Myers, of Pearisburg, Donna Perkins, of Pearisburg, Kitty Frazier, of Pearisburg; one sister, Mattie Lucas, of Bossivain, Va.; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, July 14, 1996 at 4 p.m. in the Givens Funeral Home Chapel, Pearisburg with the Rev. Shahn Wilburn officiating. Survivors are three daughters, Iva Carroll, Edith Hennrich, both of Floyd, Emogene Lohr, Fredericksburg; one son, Lawrence Howell, Christiansburg; two sisters, Rheba Alley, Floyd, Aldean Akers, Willis; brother-in-law, Alpha Dulaney, Alum Ridge; sister-in-law, Maude Akers, Danville; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren. IRVINE, Christine Pearle, 89, of Lexington, died Thursday, July 11, 1996, in Stonewall Jackson Hospital. She was born on March 23, 1907, in Rockbridge County, a daughter of the late Robert Lee Irvine and Hannah Berry Irvine. Mrs. Irvine retired from Food Service at the former Lexington High School. She was a member of the Lauderdale ARP Church, Lexington. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Fontaine Irvine on December 27, 1993. Survivors include a son, Gordon Vincent Irvine, Stuarts Draft; a daughter, Harriet Lingle Hartbarger, Lexington; six grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Irvine was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 14, 1996, at the Williams Funeral Service Chapel with Rev. Zeb Carson Williams, Rev. Robert M. Leonard, and Rev. Don McClure officiating. Interment will follow in the Stonewall Jackson Cemetery. LOWRY, William Edward, Jr., (Buster) departed this life on Thursday, July 11, 1996 at Virginia Veterans Care Center, in Salem, the son of the late William E. Lowry, Sr., and Georgianna Christian Lowry, the husband of the late Dorothy L. Lowry, all of Bedford, Va., and the father of the late William E., III. and Robert K. Lowry. He was a member of Court Street Methodist Church in Bedford, Va. from his early childhood. He served in the U.S.Army Air Corps, was a member of the Masonic Lodge, and Order of Eastern Star. Buster was employed by Pogue's Drug Store, Sealtest Food and Bedford Rubatex, and he also served as care taker of the Hagan Mansion for many years. He is survived by his daughter, Ann E. Brown, and son-in-law, Leroy Brown of Freehold, N.J. and daughters-in-law, Jeanette Lowry of Maryland and Charlotte Lowry of Washington, D.C.; two sisters-in-law, Geraldine Holmes and Cordelia Selden; and one brother-in-law, Eugene Selden all of Maryland; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-granddaughter; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at Washington Street Baptist Church on Sunday, July 14, 1996 at 2:00 p.m. Viewing will be held prior to services starting at 1:15 p.m. Burial will be held immediately after services at Fairmont Cemetery, Bedford, Va. She is survived by her husband, James A. Roberts; a son, James C. Roberts, Botetourt County; two sisters, Lola Dove, Blacksburg, Maggie Price, Radford; three brothers, Alfred Owens, Ironto, Henry Owens, Christiansburg, Andy Owens, Bedford; and a number of nieces and nephews. WALLACE, Elizabeth Brown, (``Betty""), of Roanoke, died Thursday night, July 11, 1996, at her home. She was the widow of Carl B. Wallace, was a member of Raleigh Court United Methodist Church, and a charter member of ROKEVA Women's Club. She was a registered nurse and was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother for many years. Surviving are three sons and two daughters-in-law, Carl Brickey Wallace Jr. and Susan Torella, Winston Salem, N.C., Joe Brett Wallace, Norfolk, Rodney Wayne Wallace and Sherrie Wallace, Roanoke; brother, William Howell Brown, Raleigh, N.C.; three grandchildren, Angela Marie Wallace, Timothy Allen Wallace, and Benjamin Allen Wallace. Funeral services will be conducted at the grave at Evergreen Burial Park 11 a.m. Monday with the Rev. William B. Ramey Jr. and the Rev. J. Harris Stephens officiating.
