BLUEFIELD MAN HIT CROSSING I-81

A Bluefield man walking across the northbound lanes of Interstate 81 Saturday afternoon was seriously injured when he was hit by a van, a state trooper said.

Tyrone Miller, 52, was flown to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital about 12:30 p.m., according to Trooper J.D. Roark. A nursing supervisor said Miller was in critical condition, as of 11:30 p.m. Saturday.

Miller suffered massive injuries to his legs when the van drove over him, Roark said.

According to Roark, Miller was crossing the interstate near the Draper exit to phone for help because his car had overheated. He and his sister had been headed to their brother's birthday party in Woodbridge.

The van was traveling 65 mph when the driver "saw him coming and hit her brakes, and skidded" about 200 feet before hitting Miller, Roark said.

Roark said the van never left its lane, and the driver, Carolyn Green, 56, of Bowie, Md., did not have time to stop.

She will not be charged, he said.
