A 50-year-old woman was killed in Bedford County on Saturday morning when frightened horses hitched to a wagon dragged and trampled her to death.
Police said Joan Boyer Thomas of Big Island was exercising the horses when they bolted, dragging Thomas into a fence and a barn.
Thomas somehow "wound up going underneath the horses and the wagon," according to Trooper W.O. Coleman.
Coleman said Thomas was either holding or entangled in the ``longe line," used to train horses.
She was taken to Bedford County Memorial Hospital, and was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
Her family could not be reached for comment. |- MICHAEL CROAN
