ALLS, Bessie Virginia, 81, of Christiansburg, was received by the Lord on Saturday, July 13, 1996, at Montgomery Regional Hospital. She was born February 5, 1915, to the late Henry Wiley and Lesie Alls Walters, and also was preceded in death by a brother, Henry W. Walters Jr. She was retired from Virginia Tech with over 40 years of service. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, J. R. and Mescal Smith of Christiansburg; two daughters and a son-in-law, Margaret Sue Smith of Blacksburg, and Dorothy and C. W. Toney of Amelia; one foster daughter, Selena Linkous of Blacksburg; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews; four sisters, Shelia Alice Enos of California, Ada Sue Ellen Cooper and Betty J. Harris of Collinsville and Rose A. Leonard of Tennessee; one brother, John Wesley Walters of Tennessee, and special friends, George and Genevieve Prescott of Christiansburg. Funeral services will be held Monday, July 15, 1996, at 1 p.m., in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Vince Guerra and Gary Alls. Interment will follow in Westview Cemetery. DeWEESE, Garnet St.Clair, 63, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord on Saturday evening, July 13, 1996. She was the widow of Harvey Jacob DeWeese and a former staff member at Country Bear Day Care Center. Surviving are three daughters and two sons-in-law, Gladys and Marvin Belcher, East Bend, N.C., Juanita DeWeese, Roanoke, Marcia and David McGee, Roanoke; a son and daughter-in-law, Harvey Blair and Susie DeWeese, Roanoke; four grandchildren, Melissa Hammond, Gloria Stevens, Crystal DeWeese, Samantha McGee; a great-grandson, Jacob Hammond; a brother, Sidney St.Clair, Montvale; three sisters, Mary Hall, Beckley, W.Va., Eunice Clark, Crab Orchard, W. Va. and Irene Pigg, Santa Clara, Calif. A memorial service will be conducted 3 p.m. Tuesday from Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, with Dr. Darryl G. Crim officiating. Burial will be private. FARMER, Eugene F., 67, of Roanoke, died Saturday, July 13,1996. A native of Altavista, Va., he was the son of Louella Owen Farmer and the late George Metts Farmer. He was retired from Burlington Industries after 43 years as a manager. He was a member of the Wildwood Civic League and an accomplished woodworker. A devoted family man, he is also survived by his wife, Dorothy Hamlett Farmer, of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Linda Farmer of Roanoke; daughters and sons-in-law, Kaye and Ronnie Ange of Jamesville, N.C. and Ann and Lex Alexander of Greensboro, N.C.; grandchildren, Reggie and Chad Farmer of Botetourt, Va. and Jennifer and Kevin Ange of Jamesville, N.C.; sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Ray Roark of Hurt, Va.; sister-in-law, Pat Farmer of Altavista; and several nieces and nephews and their families. Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 16, 1996 at Oakey's Vinton Chapel. Joe Slone will officiate. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. HILL, Mary Massie Cash, 82, of Buena Vista, died Saturday, July 13, 1996 at her residence. Born June 9, 1914 in Iron Gate, she was the daughter of the late James Edward and Annie Crawford Cash. She was a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church. She is survived by her husband, Joseph B. Hill, Jr.; daughter, Mary Ann Childress of Roanoke; son, Larry Cash of Buena Vista; grandchildren, Joyce Cash Franklin of San Antonio, Texas and Gary Lee Cash of Buena Vista; great-granddaughter, Ashley Elaine Hummel of San Antonio, Texas; stepgrandsons, Steven Childress of Roanoke and Douglas Childress of California. Funeral services will be 11 a.m Tuesday, July 16,1996 at Lomax Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jeff Taylor and the Rev. Art Brumit officiating. Interment will follow in Green Hill Cemetery. KNICK, Ova Hostetter, 92, of 227 East Chestnut Street, Covington, died Sunday morning, July 14, 1996, at her home. Mrs. Knick was born December 2, 1903, in Collierstown, a daughter of the late Hezekiah and Louise Wilhelm Hostetter. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvie H. Knick, in 1977; a foster son, Harry L. (``Butch"") Wilhelm, in 1986, and by five brothers and four sisters. Surviving are two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Phoebe Hostetter and Mrs. Rebecca Lipes of Covington; several nieces and nephews, including Mrs. Rebecca Redman, Mrs. Darlene Thompson, Arnold Hostetter and Harold Hostetter of Covington, Mrs. Ruby Hartbarger, Mrs. Ruth Hunter, Mrs. Lucille Lotts, Mrs. Louise Huffman, Mrs. Shirley Snider and Osborn Hostetter of Lexington, Mrs. Madeline Ogdan and Richard Hostetter of Glasgow and Mrs. Thelma Wilkosz of Broadview Heights, Ohio, and great-nieces and great-nephews, Mrs. Patricia Cottrell of Covington, Walter Knick of Arlington and Warnel Knick of Philadelphia, Pa. KOVACH, Steven , 79, of Radford, died Saturday, July 13, 1996 in a Radford hospital. He was a veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife, Mildred Reed Kovach, Radford; a daughter and son-in-law, Dianne K. and William Weeks, Newburg, N.Y.; son and daughter-in-law, Charles R. and Susan Kovach, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. NICHOLS, Catherine B., 69, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, July 13, 1996. She retired from Oak Hall Cap & Gown after 18 years of service and was a member of Greenridge Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her brothers, James, Billy, and Bobby Ward. She is survived by her husband, Lewis W. ROBERTSON, Elliott Henry, 64, of Roanoke, died Sunday, July 14, 1996. He retired from the Roanoke City Juvenile Detention Home after 20 years of service. A member of Fellowship Baptist Church, Mr. Robertson is survived by his wife, Shelby B. Robertson of Roa noke; brothers and sisters-in-law, J. SHINDELL, Cherie, resident of Roanoke County, died on Sunday, July 14, 1996 at her home. She was the widow of Walter E. Shindell, and is survived by two sisters, Mary Jane Burgess of Roanoke County and Charlotte Biggs of Cobbs Creek; a cousin, Jack Airheart of Roanoke; and loving nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at Oakey's South Chapel Tuesday, July 16, 1996 at 11 a.m., with Wanda Hancock officiating. The family will receive friends at Oakey's South Chapel Monday night from 7 to 9 p.m. She was a native of Henry County, Va. and a long-time resident of Roanoke County, where she operated a small commercial vineyard. She graduated from Virginia Western Community College in June 1988 at the age of 80. She was a member of the First Church of Christ Scientist, Roanoke, where she held many offices, including treasurer. She was a 20 year member of the League of Women Voters of the Roanoke Area, working on environmental and foreign policy matters. She had been elected to the Senior Citizens Hall of Fame, Roanoke County, for her work for the betterment of life in the community and had received the 4-H Award of the Silver Clover for volunteer services with the 4-H. She also received a Certificate of Appreciation from the IRS for her participation in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program. With her sister, she donated land for Happy Hollow Gardens, a local park. Memorials may be made to Good Samaritan Hospice, Inc. or your favorite charity.

SMITH, Carl Vernon, 84, of Blacksburg, formerly of Roanoke, died Saturday, July 13, 1996 at Virginia Veterans Care Center in Salem. Mr. Smith was a veteran of World War II and retired from the Appalachian Power Company. He was a member of the Melrose Methodist Church in Roanoke. He is survived by his wife, June Oney Smith of Blacksburg; a son and daughter-in-law, David O. and Deborah B. Smith of Blacksburg; a brother and sister-in-law, Alvin H. and Betty M. SMITH, Viola Taylor, 94, of Rt. 1, New Castle, died Saturday, July 13, 1996 in a Shawsville nursing home. She was a long-time member of Level Green Christian Church and Maywood Garden Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bryan Moody Smith and grandson, Timothy M. Smith. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-l aw, Woodrow W. and Irene Smith, Gene and Linda Smith; one daughter and son-in-law, Geraldine and Billy Farrier; six grandsons; seven great-grandchildren, all of Craig County. STEVENS, Kenneth D., 52, of Troutville, died Saturday, July 13, 1996. He was employed by Truck Enterprises of Roanoke. Survivors include his wife, Wanda C. Stevens, and a son, Charles W. Stevens. Funeral services for Mr. Stevens will take place in the Rader Funeral Home Chapel, Daleville, at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 16, 1996, with the Rev. Paul White of Trinity Brethren Church officiating. SUTPHIN, Emma Lake Kathleen, 90, of Kire Road, Gold Bond, died Sunday morning, July 14, 1996, in Lewis-Gale Medical Center in Salem. Born on August 12, 1905, in Giles County, she was a daughter of the late George W. and Annie Collins Ashley. As a young girl, ``Aunt Lake"" was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and in the last years had been active in the Pembroke Assembly of God. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Sutphin; a daughter, Mary Kathleen Tickle, and a sister, Mary A. Link. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Evangeline and George Tickle of Pembroke; a son-in-law, Walter Tickle of Pearisburg; five grandchildren, Ellen and husband David Tate of Pearisburg, Edna Terry of Dublin, William and wife Jean Tickle of Roanoke, Lester and wife Loretta Tickle and Arnold and wife Doris Tickle of Pembroke; 13 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren, and among several sisters and brothers-in-law a dear sister-in-law, Hattie L. Thompson, who made her home with her for many years. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, July 16, 1996, at 2:30 p.m., at the Kendall Funeral Home Chapel in Pembroke, with the Rev. TALLAR, Floritta Hutsona, 82, formerly of Roanoke, passed away in Chicago, Ill. on Wednesday, July 10,196. She was the daughter of the late Yousouf and Ruby Hutsona, born in Meridan, Miss. Her father, a native of Barbados, was a well-known Tailor her in the City of Roanoke and was very popular because of the precision and pride he took in his work for many satisfied clients. He and his wife made their home in Roanoke and reared their children here, where they received their education from the Roanoke City Schools. Surviving Mrs. Tallar are one daughter, Little Floritta Tallar, Chicago; two sisters, Mrs. Patrina Hutsona Newman and her daughter, Trina Newman, both of Roanoke, Ms. Celesta Hutsona, Chicago, Ill.; three brothers, Rev. Almanda Hutsona and his wife, Gracie, San Diego, Calif.; Leony Hutsona, Chicago, Ill., Yousouf Hutsona, Jr., Roanoke; one aunt and uncle, Helen and Mack McCollum, Chicago, Ill.; special friend of the family, Mr. Isaac Brown, Roanoke; sisters-in-law, Willie Mae Hutsona, Chicago and Ernestina Hutsona, Charlotte, N.C.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 18, 1996 at 12 noon at the Taylor Funeral Home, 63 E. 79th St., Chicago, Ill, with the Rev. Almanda Hutsona of San Diego officiating. VINEYARD, Eva Penn, of Bedford, died at 4 a.m. Saturday, July 13, 1996, in Bedford County Memorial Hospital. God dispatched an angel of mercy from Heaven to carry safely the soul of Mrs. Eva Penn Vineyard from her labors to victory. Her faith and determination were a source of strength to her family and friends. She was in constant touch with God, and He carried her through many difficult times. She was born in Bedford on January 31, 1897, to the late Robert and Lucy Tanner Penn. She was converted in her youth and joined Washington Street Baptist Church in Bedford. She was a member of the Ladies Aid Society, the Pastor's Aid Club, the Ever Ready Club, and was secretary of the Improvement Club. She was known to all as ``Miss Eva."" She was united in holy matrimony to the late James Otha Vineyard, and was preceded in death by four brothers. She is survived by a devoted nephew, Harry Padgett Carter and wife of Omaha, Neb., and the descendants of the Penn, Johnson and Warner families, and the late Ola Vineyard and George Wright families. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 16, 1996, at Washington Street Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Fairmont Cemetery, Bedford. Her remains will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service. Bedford Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
