NAMES ON CAMPUS

NEW RIVER COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Terri Hubbard Shelburne of Dublin was recently named the 1996 Outstanding Support Staff Member at New River Community College. Shelburne is a senior secretary for the college's Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

Shelburne earned an associate degree in secretarial science from the college in 1987 and started working there in 1988. Having had no experience with the deaf, she enrolled in the college's sign-language classes. She now helps students prepare grant proposals, among other responsibilities.

The college's personnel committee selected Shelburne for the annual award from nominees submitted by faculty and staff.

Shelburne is a 1985 graduate of Pulaski County High School. She is the daughter of Gene and Rose Hubbard and lives in Pulaski with her husband and son. She also serves on the NRCC Alumni Board.

An endowed scholarship has been named at New River Community College in memory of the late Rachel Mable Hendricks of Pulaski County. The J. Robert Dobyns family donated the money for the scholarship, which will provide $1,000 to a student at New River Community College each year for as long as the college exists. The first recipient of the scholarship is Simone Gabriel of Radford.

RADFORD UNIVERSITY

David C. Pine was recently appointed assistant dean of student/judicial affairs coordinator at Radford University. An RU alumni, he received his bachelor's degree in business administration in 1989 and his master's degree in criminal justice in 1992 from the university. Previously he was judicial coordinator and residence hall director at the Savannah College of the Arts and Design and residence hall director at the University of Tennessee.

Caroline S. McTeer has been named the new assistant for internal affairs at Radford University. She will succeed Betsy Little, who will retire from the university this month.

McTeer currently is a student services specialist in RU's disability resource office. Previously she has worked in the College of Education and Human Development and the dean of students office. An RU alumnus, McTeer has a master's degree in counselor education with a concentration in student personnel services in higher education.

Clarence White, a management professor at Radford University, received the National Business Education Association's Teacher of the Year Award. This is the highest award given by the association to a college business teacher. White was selected from 27 nominees nationwide.

White has been a business educator for 23 years and has taught at Radford since 1982. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses and coordinates the business education and administrative systems programs.

In addition, White serves on the advisory boards of the Pulaski County Business Education Advisory Council and the New River Community College Office Technology Advisory Council. He also is director of the Radford Region Future Business Leaders of America.

VIRGINIA TECH

Kenneth L. Reifsnider of Engineering Science and Mechanics has been named associate provost for interdisciplinary programs in Research and Graduate Studies at Virginia Tech. Reifsnider is the Alexander Giacco Professor of Engineering Science and Mechanics. He is director and co-founder of the Virginia Institute for Material Systems and the Tech Center for Composite Materials and Structures.

Reifsnider's new position became effective in July. The position is half-time and he will retain his faculty position. Reifsnider has been at Virginia Tech since 1968.

The U.S. Department of Defense recently awarded $1.2 million in grants and contracts to the electrical engineering faculty at the Virginia Tech Information Systems Center for three computer systems research projects.
