* Former UVa standout Simon Cooke fired a 2-under 69 to qualify for the 1996 AMF/Signet Open of Virginia.
Cooke, playing in the qualifier held at River's Bend Golf Course in Chester, took one of six available qualifying spots for the event, to be played Thursday through Sunday at Richmond's Willow Oaks Country Club.
Joining Cooke was Roanoke's Dicky Linkous, of Hunting Hills Country Club, who shot a 69.
Graham Andrews and Bobby Penn, both of Roanoke Country Club, failed to make the cut. Andrews finished tied for 13th after a 72, and Penn shot a 79 to finish tied for 41st.
* The woman who accused four Clemson football players of gang-raping her in a university dorm plans to testify on her own behalf during this week's trial, a prosecutor said in Pickens, S.C.
Based on statements to police, the woman's testimony could describe group sex, watching sex acts from closets and underage drinking by football players, dealing another blow to a program that had eight players arrested in the past five months.
