INDIANS RIP REELING AVALANCHE

SALEM DROPS its sixth game of seven in a 5-2 loss to Kinston.

The two-week trip may be starting to take its toll on the Salem Avalanche.

Tim Jorgensen hit two home runs and David Caldwell pitched eight strong innings as the Kinston Indians rolled past Salem 5-2 in a Carolina League game Tuesday night. (Box score in Baseball Scoreboard)

Salem, which snapped a five-game losing streak Monday night, has lost six of its past seven games and is now 5-8 on its trip with one game being postponed and two games remaining. The Avalanche has lost five straight games to Kinston.

Caldwell (10-9) was masterful, giving up two runs - one earned - on four hits.

The Indians (11-12) got on the board in the first off Salem starter Chandler Martin. Martin hit Patricio Claudio with a pitch and then allowed a single to Guillermo Mercedes. Claudio stole third and came around on a single by Sean Casey.

Kinston tacked on another run in the second on Jorgensen's two-out solo homer for a two-run lead.

The Indians took a 3-0 lead in the fourth. Jerry Taylor walked with two outs and Claudio followed with a single to put runners at first and third. Mercedes was then hit by a pitch and a bases-loaded walk to Chan Perry allowed Taylor to score.

Kinston's final two runs came in the fifth, again with two outs, as Jorgensen's two-run homer gave the Indians a 5-0 lead. Jorgensen now has 12 homers on the season to lead the team and has hit three homers against the Avalanche.

Salem (10-13) cut the lead to 5-1 in the seventh when Chad Gambill reached on a two-base error by Jorgensen and scored on Will Scalzitti's single. The Avalanche's final run came in the eighth when Pookie Jones doubled and scored on a groundout by Elvis Pena.

Martin (0-4), who hasn't come close to winning since being called up from Asheville (N.C.), took the loss, giving up five runs in 42/3 innings, walking three and striking out seven.
