WASHINGTON - In a battle that pitted veteran lawmakers against idealistic freshmen, the House voted Tuesday to cancel a 2.3 percent cost-of-living pay raise for members of Congress and senior executive and judicial officials.
The measure, by freshmen Reps. Jack Metcalf, R-Wash., Todd Tiahrt, R-Kan., and Bill Luther, D-Minn., would freeze congressional salaries in 1997.
That would deny a roughly $3,000 pay raise to rank-and-file members, leaving their salary at $133,600 for the fifth consecutive year.
Also affected are federal judges and top Clinton administration officials, including Vice President Al Gore and the Cabinet. - Associated Press Veterans' benefits to rise 2.8 percent
WASHINGTON - Disabled veterans and veterans' survivors would receive cost-of-living increases in their benefits, starting in December, under legislation the House passed Tuesday.
Adopted by voice vote, the bill affects about 2.2 million veterans who receive disability benefits and about 300,000 spouses and children of veterans who died of service-connected causes.
The amount of the increase will be based on inflation, but a 2.8 percent rise currently is anticipated. - Associated Press
