Project Discovery accepting students
TAP Project Discovery is seeking Roanoke and Roanoke County students in grades six through eight for enrollment in the 1996-97 school year.
The Project Discovery program provides information and guidance to students and their families on how to choose a college, find financial aid and scholarships and make the transition into college life.

Citizenship classes begin in August
The Refugee and Immigration Services office will offer citizenship classes at the Jefferson Center on Aug. 17, 24, 31 and Sept. 7 from 10 a.m. to noon.
The fee is $25 for all four classes and a study guide.
The next citizenship test is scheduled for Sept. 14 at William Fleming High School. To register, call Alice Duehl at 342-7561 by Aug. 16.
Retired firemen's picnic canceled
The Retired Roanoke City Fireman's Picnic, usually held on the third Saturday of July, has been postponed until a later date. Members will be notified of the new date.
Workshops focus on food preservation
The Roanoke and Roanoke County offices of the Virginia Cooperative Extension, in cooperation with local departments of parks and recreation, are offering free food-preservation workshops. Participants will learn methods of canning, freezing and preserving.
Lids of canners with pressure gauges may be brought in for testing.
A children's program may be offered.
The sessions are at Preston Park on July 23 at 7 p.m.; at Craig Avenue Center July 25 at 10 a.m.; and at The Brambleton Center Aug. 1 at 10 a.m. To register call 857-7915 or 772-7524.
Salem library needs books for sale
The Friends of the Salem Library are collecting books for their annual book sale to be held Sept. 7 at the Salem Public Library, at 28 E. Main St. Proceeds from the sale will benefit library activities and needs.

Junior service club seeks members
A Modern Woodmen of America Junior Service Club will hold an organizational party on July 27 in Roanoke's Fallon Park. Walter L. Dodson III of Roanoke is the club's sponsor. Darlene Dodson of Roanoke is the group's junior director.
The club will be the 14th in the state. There are 800 clubs nationwide.
