WATER PROJECT FLOWS ALONG IN VINTON CHARLES STEBBINS

Vinton Town Council has agreed to spend about $221,000 to improve water flow in two areas and to connect the municipal water system with a new tank.

At a meeting this week, council members awarded a contract to E.C. Pace Co., of Roanoke, to install about 2,500 feet of 8-inch water line between Augusta and Raleigh avenues and from Vinyard Road to the Timberidge Farms area.

Lines also would be installed between a pump station near Chestnut Avenue and the site of a 1 million gallon tank south of Third Street that would replace one on Virginia Avenue.

Town Manager Clay Goodman told council members that the Pace firm was the lowest of three bidders.

The proposed tank is on hold, however, because the low bid for its construction - $424,488 -was far more than the $275,000 available for a tank. Goodman said the town's engineers are attempting to modify the tank's specifications to lower the cost.

On another matter, council adopted a resolution requesting that the Blue Ridge Parkway be given an All-American Road designation.

This is a new promotional program begun by the Federal Highway Administration to call attention to scenic highways throughout the nation.

Goodman said this is the first year of the program, and Roanoke Valley promoters hope the Blue Ridge Parkway will be the first to receive it.
