MAN CHARGED IN RAPE OF GIRL

A 21-year-old Southwest Roanoke man has been charged with the June rape of a 14-year-old girl whom he knew.

Clarence Switzor was arrested and charged after police responded to a fight on the 300 block of Day Avenue Southwest about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Switzor was arguing with the girl's father about the alleged sexual assault, police said. Switzor's arm had been broken, and he was admitted to Roanoke Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Police said the girl told them she was at Switzor's home playing cards and baking cookies late in the evening of June 27. Just after midnight, on June 28, she went into the kitchen to check on the cookies and was raped, police said.

Tuesday's fight broke out after the girl's father confronted Switzor, who had been bragging about the alleged offense, police said.

In another incident, a 28-year-old Elliston man's car was carjacked in Northwest Roanoke on Monday night. The incident was reported at 1:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Police gave this account: About 9 p.m. Monday, a man asked the motorist for a ride on the 800 block of Hanover Avenue Northwest. When he refused, the man pulled a handgun and told him he was taking the car. The driver fled on foot.

Police found the car in the 800 block of Hanover Avenue on Tuesday. They said it was likely the would-be robber was unable to start the car.
