AKERS, Charles Thomas, (``Tom""), 70, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, July 17, 1996, at his home under the loving care of his family. He was a member of First Baptist Church, an Air Force Veteran of World War II, a member of Virginia Heights Lodge #324 AF & AM, and a Past Worshipful Master of Melrose Lodge #139 AF & AM. Mr. Akers was a retired Permit and Tax Consultant with Sonwise Service Center, which he founded and operated. Surviving are his wife, Marlyn G. Akers; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Bruce M. and Eileen Akers, Tampa, Fla., Thomas M. and Jeanne Akers, Roanoke, Roland and Katrina Baxley, Roanoke, Dwayne Baxley, Roanoke; a daughter and son-in-law, Margaret A. and Mark Knopf, Roanoke; nine grandchildren, Cody Akers, Carter Akers, Chance Akers, Kate Akers, Annie Akers, Lauren Baxley, Ben Baxley, Ben Knopf, Emily Knopf; a brother, Richard J. (``Dick'') Akers, Roanoke; two sisters, Ann A. Barnett, Salem, Margaret A. (``Peggy'') Wallace, Ocala, Fla. Funeral services will be conducted from the graveside, Evergreen Burial Park, at 10 a.m. Friday, with Dr. Charles G. Fuller and Dr. Robert L. Alderman officiating. BILLINGS, Thomas Bryant, 79, of Buena Vis ta, died Wednesday, July 17, 1996, at his home. Born on June 17, 1917 in Chatham, he was the son of the late Davey Thomas and Ruth Astin Billings. He was a World War II veteran, retired from the U.S. Postal Service, and a member of the Buena Vista Presbyterian Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Susie Clark Billings. He is survived by two daughters, Suzanne Coleman and husband, Steve, and Betty Terry and husband, Homer, all of Buena Vista; four grandchildren, Caroline, David and Lindsey Coleman, and Shonna Lynn, all of Buena Vista; a sister, Laurine B. Stevens, Arlington; and a brother, William D. Billings, Richmond. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, July 19, 1996, at the Buena Vista Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Rebekah J. Maul officiating. Interment will be in Westview Cemetery, Farmville, at 2 p.m. on Friday, July 19. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Lomax Funeral Home. BRYANT, David Scott, 23, of Radford, passed away Wednesday, July 17, 1996, at Radford Community Hospital. Survivors include his mother, Jane R. Jones of Radford; father, James W. BUCHANAN, Mary Ruth, of Roanoke County, died Tuesday, July 16, 1996. She was the wife of James S. Buchanan. Mrs. Buchanan was preceded in death by two sisters, Lottie Wood and Leona Sink. FINNBLADE, Catherine Lyle, (``Katie""), of Timonium, Md., died Wednesday, July 17, 1996. She was the beloved wife of the late Richard Charles Finnblade, and devoted daughter of Aaron K. III and Isabel Tryon Lyle. She was the dear sister of Phillip T. and William T. Lyle; lo ving stepmother of Pamela Ruth Hurajt, Kim Bianchini and Richard Todd Finnblade; cherished niece of Elizabeth Lyle Becker. She is also survived by four stepgrandchildren, and five nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at Lemmon Funeral Home of Dulaney Valley Inc., 10 W. JOHNSTON, James Austin, 43, of Narrows, died Tuesday, July 16, 1996. Mr. Johnston was born on July 23, 1952, in Pearisburg, and was a son of the late George William and Eileen Morris Johnston. Mr. Johnston was an employee of the Hoechst-Celanese Plant in Narrows. He is survived by his wife, Heida Martin Johnston; one son, Michael Johnston of Narrows; one daughter, April Johnston of Narrows; two sisters, Becky Lucas of Pembroke, Dreama Blankenship of Narrows; two brothers, Bobby Johnston of Narrows, Danny Johnston of Eggleston. MANLOVE, Eula Gay Winesette, 86, of Knoxville, Tenn., and form erly of Carroll County, died Tuesday, July 16, 1996, at her residence. She was born in Carroll County, the daughter of the late Brawley M. and Sarah McGee Winesette. She graduated from the University of New York with a B.S. in nursing and practiced the art of health and healing for 50 years at the Delaware Hospital where she retired as supervisor. She also received her Master of Science degree from Cornell University. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Manlove, on April 1, 1955; a sister, Melissa Clayton; and two brothers, Gaylon and Arlie Winesette. She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Clestine Taylor of Austinville; a brother, Jotty Winesette of Knoxville, Tenn. Several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews also survive. A graveside service and interment will be held Friday, July 19, 1996, at 2 p.m. at the Pickett Cemetery in Carroll County, with Mrs. Clestine Taylor officiating. The family will receive friends at the Reese Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Reese Funeral Home in Austinville is in charge of the arrangements.
MARTIN, Hazel Rebecca Edenton, 68, of Spotsylvania, died Wednesday, July 17, 1996, in Western State Hospital in Staunton, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was the daughter of the late Lee and Elmira Edenton of Spotsylvania. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Diane Rebecca and Nelson Powell of Roanoke, Beverly Battelle and Wayne Weeks of Richmond; four grandchildren, Belinda Katherine Powell of Ocala, F la., Kirsti Rebecca Powell of Roanoke; Wesley Edenton Weeks and Owen Kingsley Weeks, both of Richmond; three brothers; and three sisters; and many nephews and nieces. MILLIRON, Clarence Astor, 85, of Callaway, passed away at Roanoke Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, July 17, 1996. He was a well-known car salesman and was devoted to his family. Mr. Milliron was a member of Piedmont Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder for many years. He was a 50-year member of Isaacs Lodge #29 A.F. & A.M. and a member of Rocky Mount Chapter #141 Order of the Eastern Star. He was preceded in death by a son, Forrest Milliron, and an infant daughter. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mildred Angell Milliron; two sons and their wives, Jack and Cassandra Milliron, Vinton, Bob and Sherry Milliron, Salem; one grandson, Jay Milliron, Boones Mill; two sisters, Janie Milliron, Rocky Mount, Clara Broughton, Powhatan; one brother, Edward Milliron, Rocky Mount; several nieces and nephews. SAUER, Hugh A., 74, of Goodview, died Tuesday, July 16, 1996. He was a member of St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Vinton, Va. Mr. Sauer served 6 years in the U.S. Navy in both European and Pacific Theaters. He drove a to ur bus in Alaska for 4 years, worked with Alaskan Native Service as a special assistant in Shageluk, Alaska, served in the Peace Corp. in St. Lucie in the Carribbean from 1990-1992. He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service. The family would like to thank the Roanoke Rehab Center and the Roanoke Memorial Hospice for their excellent care and support. He is survived by his wife, Bertha B. Sauer; six children, April Whitt (John), Hugh Sauer Jr. (Mary), Jennifer Meyers (James), Roberta Hillhouse (Michael), Audrey Wilson (Donald), Timothy Sauer (Susan); fourteen grandchildren. SHIVELY, Hazel Louise Eanes, 72, of Callaway, passed away Wednesday, July 17, 1996, at the home of her daughter, Carla Hodges. She was born October 10, 1923, in McDowell County, W. Va. Daughter of the late William Lee and Mary Willis Eanes. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, William Morgan Shively; a son, Ronnie Wayne Shively; and four sisters. Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Larry R. and Ann Shively, Kingsport, Tenn., William Lee (Billy) and Betty Jo Shively, Callaway, Kermit D. Shively, Rocky Mt., Mrs. Ronnie Wayne (Wanda June) Shively, Blue Ridge; three daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret and Kermit (Jimmy) Scott, Callaway, Betty and Jeff Lackey, Gastonia, N.C., Carla and Michael Hodges, Glade Hill; one sister, Thelma Linkous, Bluefield, W. Va; fourteen grandchildren, several great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews and two special friends, Goldie Agee and Charlotte Davis. SIMON, Ethel Holly, 65, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, July 16, 1996. She is survived by her devoted husband, Eugene Simon; one son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Kathy Simon; five daughters and a son-in-law, Linda and James Johnson, Janet Crockett, Sharon Simon, Crystal Simon, and Angela Simon, all of Roanoke; 14 grandchildren; three sisters, Elsie Jernigan, Roanoke, Margaret Garrison, Pennsylvania, and Alice Robertson, Roanoke, Roanoke; one sister-in-law, Mildred Holly, Massachusetts; one brother-in-law, Frank Garrison, Pennsylvania; uncle and aunts, Raymond and Sadie Muse, and Lucy Patterson, all of Roanoke; a devoted niece, Shjan Spooner, New York; other devoted nieces and nephews, relatives and friends. THORNTON, Essie Stanley, 97, of Rocky Mount, died Wednesday, July 17, 1996. Born April 7, 1899, she was a da ughter of the late William Lee and Cora Lee Young Stanley. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alonza R. Thornton; and sister, Reba Mason. Mrs. Thornton attended Ferrum Training School, taught in the Franklin County School System for 34 years, and was a member of Franklin Heights Baptist Church. Surviving are two sisters, Olive Stanley of Arlington and Belva Patterson of Fieldale; two brothers, Elmo Stanley of Whitestone and William (Bill) Stanley of Baltimore, Md.. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, July 19, 1996, at Lynch Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jack Corn officiating. Interment will follow in Story Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. She is survived by two granddaughters, Jennifer Saul, Sandra Barham, both of Roanoke; three great-grandchildren, Ashley Powell, Charles Barham, Christopher Barham, all of Roanoke.
