10TH STATE FILES SUIT OVER SMOKING COSTS

Connecticut filed a $1 billion lawsuit against the tobacco industry Thursday, joining nine other states that are seeking to recover taxes spent treating tobacco-related illnesses.

The lawsuit also is aimed at what state Attorney General Richard Blumenthal called aggressive marketing of products to youngsters.

``Every year, Connecticut taxpayers spend $100 million on Medicaid alone to treat the diseases that result from the tobacco industry's relentless effort to addict our residents to their products,'' he said.

Similar lawsuits are being planned by more states. |-Associated Press
