ROAD TO RUIN ENDS WITH SALEM LOSS

THE AVALANCHE HEADS home after a 2-1 defeat, its eighth loss in nine games.

Salem's two-week trip came to a dismal end Thursday night when the Kinston Indians beat the Avalanche 2-1 in a Carolina League game. Salem has lost eight of nine games.

John Giudice put the Avalanche on the board in the first inning when he smashed his 16th home run of the year, a drive over the left-field wall.

Kinston (13-12) used one of five walks by Avalanche starter Luther Hackman to score in the bottom of the sixth. Second baseman Gerad Cawhorn drew the base on balls and shortstop Guillermo Mercedes doubled to right-center to score Cawhorn.

The Indians won it in the bottom of the ninth inning. Salem reliever Todd Genke (5-6) walked Kinston's Chan Perry, and Gary Hagy came in to run for Perry. Salem's Pat McClinton came in and gave up a double to Sean Casey before David Miller singled to right to bring home the winning run.

Kinston starter Terry Harvey gave up all four Salem hits and one earned run in seven innings. The former North Carolina State quarterback struck out four. Julio Perez (1-1) picked up the victory in relief.
