GIRL SENT TO RICHMOND DETENTION

The last juvenile in a trio of girls that attacked a worker in the Coyner Springs Juvenile Detention facility was committed Thursday to the custody of the state Department of Youth and Family Services.

Botetourt Juvenile and Domestic Relations Judge Dudley "Buzz" Emick reduced an attempted-murder charge to assault on a corrections officer and turned the 17-year-old girl, who is pregnant, over to a state detention facility in Richmond for an indefinite time.

The girl joined with two other girls, 13 and 16, to attack Mary C. Gardner, 48, on May 19. Gardner dropped off some sheets in the girls' room, and when she turned her back, the 17-year-old tried to choke her with a sheet. The other girls pulled Gardner down and sprayed deodorant in her mouth. On Tuesday, they both were given suspended commitments to the state and placed in drug and alcohol treatment programs.
