DUBLIN EXPANDS REGIONAL JAIL SITE

Dublin has expanded the acreage in the town's industrial park to accommodate a proposed regional jail.

Town Council agreed Thursday night to expand the 25 acres under option to the New River Valley Regional Jail Authority to 27.79 acres.

Assistant Radford City Manager Bob Lloyd, chairman of the jail authority, and Bill King, representing architects Thompson & Litton, explained that the jail configuration would not fit on the 25 acres if there was to be room for future expansion.

Based on projected use of the jail in future years by localities that are part of the project and others who are likely to have to rent beds in the regional jail, the authority anticipates at least two near-future expansions of the planned 240-bed jail. Participating localities now are Pulaski, Giles and Grayson counties and Radford.

State corrections officials recently cited Grayson County's aging jail with 12 deficiencies, following an unannounced inspection, and raised the possibility of closing it unless the deficiencies are corrected. Local jails are having increasing problems meeting state standards.

Completion of the regional jail is more than a year away.

In other business Thursday night, Dublin Town Council re-elected David Farmer as the town's vice mayor and chose an oversize rough-textured reddish brick for its new municipal building to be built in the Dublin Town Center. Ground was broken to start the new town hall earlier this month.

Council also voted to extend water lines to serve several lots on the edge of town including a pet hospital being built by Dr. E. Vann Covey.
