HOW WE DID THIS STORY

Like the Life-Guard 10 crew, staff writer Mark Morrison and staff photographer Eric Brady had to play the same waiting game to report this story. They were given permission to ride along on Life-Guard calls, and spent more than a dozen shifts waiting for the right flight.

Some of those days ended without a single call, or the crew was grounded because of bad weather. On other days, the flights consisted of routine hospital-to-hospital patient transports. Nothing that exemplified the archetypical Life-Guard call.

Then came the flight of Clarence Callaham.

A special thanks here goes to Callaham, who didn't know a newspaper reporter and photographer would be along for his flight. Graciously, he agreed afterward to share his hour of drama so that this story could be written.
