AREA SCHOOLS WIN GRANTS FOR THE ARTS

The Virginia Commission for the Arts met recently met recently and approved grant awards totalling over $2 million. Arts organizations, schools and school divisions, and units of local government across the state will benefit from funding through several categories.

Grants totalling $1,702,100 were awarded to 146 non-profit art organizations under the commission's General Operating Support program which provides financial assistance to arts and organizations for administrative expenses. The program is designed to continue, strengthen, and expand the programs of organizations of artistic merit.

Grants awarded for 1996-1997 by the Virginia Commission for the Arts are as follows: Blacksburg High School, $900, for Artist Residency: Visual Art; Fine Arts Center for the New River Valley, Pulaski, $3,700 and Virginia Arts Presenters, Blacksburg, $500 for general operating support; Town of Narrows, $4,000, Pulaski County, $4,000, and Town of Pulaski, $3,000 for a local government Challenge Grants.

The Virginia Commission for the Arts is the state agency that supports the arts though funding from the Virginia General Assembly and the National Endowment for the Arts. The Commission distributes grant awards to artists, arts and other not-for-profit organizations, educational institutions, educators and local governments, and provides technical assistance in arts management.
