STUDENTS HONORED FOR CONSERVATION EFFORTS

Three Pulaski County student groups recently were recognized by the Rotary Club of Pulaski for their project entries in the Marvin "Bud" Webb environmental/ conservations award. The annual award is presented in memory of Webb, a past Pulaski Rotary president who was an avid outdoorsman and environmentalist.

The first-place prize, worth $200, was awarded to the Junior Ecology Club of Riverlawn Elementary School for its development of a children's forest and butterfly garden on the school's ground. The children planted more than 200 trees and continue to tend both the forest and butterfly garden on a regular basis.

The second-place award, worth $100, was presented to Beverly Nicely's Virginia Studies class at Claremont Elementary School. Students in that class created an educational card game entitled "Virginia's Water Wonders." The cards included pictures and descriptions of the various bodies of water found in the state.

An honorable mention award went to Dianne Graham's social studies class of Claremont Elementary School. Students made a paper quilt that lists ways to conserve water on each quilt square.

Eight students at Kipps Elementary were presented with Good Citizenship awards by Draper Aden Associates, consulting engineers in Blacksburg. The awards were part of the Partners in Education Program. The students receiving the award "best epitomized the standards of citizenship set in the community," said Kipps Principal Ray Van Dyke.

The students, who are rising sixth-graders, are Steven Baker, Amber Hendricks, Alexis Kopakowski, Christopher Sellers, Matthew Price, Jennifer Simonetti, Joshua Bowman and Lindsay Robinson. Each student received a $50 U.S. Savings Bond.

The students were selected by their teachers. Their grades and interactions with peers and teachers were considered. Partners in Education is a national program that links business and corporate sponsors with public elementary, intermediate and secondary schools.

Members of the Christiansburg Future Farmers of America Chapter attended the annual convention of the Virginia FFA State Association June 25-29. Christiansburg's contingent was named a superior chapter in the FFA chapter awards program. In addition, several members received awards at the convention, held at Virginia Tech. Two students were named state winners. They are Isaac Carey , state winner of the Middle School Agriscience awards program; and Nathan Brewbaker, first state winner of the Emerging Agriculture Technologies Proficiency Award.

The following students were named area winners in the FFA Proficiency awards program. Andy Bishop in floriculture and nursery operations; Jay Ware in diversified crop production and forage production; Stewart Milton in specialty animal production; David Underwood in forestry production; and Travis Echols in turf management.

Other award winners include Andrew Dickenson, second in the state FFA talent contest. Dickenson is a classical guitarist and will attend Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore this fall. Six students also received the state FFA degree: Brewbaker, Jay Clark, Jerry Showman, Milton, Underwood and Charlie Tyler.
