Two months ago, downtown merchants complained to City Council about inadequate parking for their customers and were asked to bring back a proposal. They came back Monday with that and living testimony of the problem - and council took a small step in response.
Before an audience of about 30 people, six downtown business owners revealed how inadequate parking has affected their businesses. Curtis Graham, president of Main Street Radford, a nonprofit organization, presented a concept sketch of a possible parking facility to be built behind a block of eight to 10 stores on Norwood Street.
After a half-hour presentation, City Council agreed unanimously to have City Manager Robert Asbury seek bids for a preliminary engineering report on the parking facility. A new lot would add 80 to 90 spaces to downtown parking and provide second floor access to the Norwood Street businesses.
