BAKER, Earnest Bennett, 74, of Pearisburg, died Tuesday, July 23, 1996. Mr. Baker was a ve teran of World War II and served in China, Burma and India. Mr. Baker was the retired Animal Control Officer for Giles County. He was a member of the Green Valley United Methodist Church. Mr. Baker was born in Ballard, W. Va. on November 28, 1921 and was a son of the late Lamar S. Baker and Hattie Miller Baker. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Mae Stephens Baker. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Vickie and Mike Collins, Pearisburg; one brother, James W. Baker, Salem; two sisters, Mrs. David P. (Ella Mae) Williams, Peterstown, W. Va., Mrs. James R. (Betty) Caldwell, Salem; two granddaughters, Jil and Traci Collins, Pearisburg. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, July 25, 1996, at 2 p.m. in the Givens Funeral Chapel, Pearisburg, with the Rev. Larry Patton and the Rev. David Olinger officiating, with interment in Birchlawn Burial Park. The family will receive friends at the Givens Funeral Home Wednesday evening from 6 to 9 p.m.

BUCK, Ella Gingrich, (``Eloise''), 83, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, July 22, 1996, in the South Roanoke Nursing Home. She was born February 26, 1913, in Chambersburg, Pa., a d aughter of the late William Earl Gingrich and Eva Mae Hull Gingrich. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence M. Buck Jr.; two sisters, Mary G. Bird and Miriam W. Williamson; and one brother, Ruelan Gingrich. She was a member of the Bedford Christian Church. She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Buck Kern and husband, Roy, Roanoke; two brothers, Earl Gingrich, Akron, Ohio, Paul Gingrich, Baltimore, Md.; a grandson, Ken Kern and wife, Ramona; a granddaughter, Kathy Kern Keoughan. Graveside services will be conducted Thursday, July 25, 1996, at 11 a.m. from the Greenwood Cemetery. CAMPER, Mary Florence, 87, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, July 23, 1996. Born in Simmonsville on January 12, 1909, she is survived by two sisters, Irma Camper, with whom she made her home for the last 25 years, and Laura Stiff. CARTER, Beulah Clemons, 73, of Vinton, passed away Tuesday, July 23, 1996, at the residence of her daughter. She was born May 2, 1923 in Franklin County, a daughter of the late Willie Lee Clemons and Eva Whorley Clemons. Her husband was th e late Grover Keith Carter. She was a member of the Flint Hill Baptist Church. She is survived by a daughter, Carolyn C. Gordon, Vinton; three sons, Grover Lee Carter, Vinton, Roy J. Carter, Scruggs, James Kenneth Carter, Moneta; two brothers, E. M. CONGRESS, Robert W., 67, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, July 23, 1996. He was a member of Shenandoah Baptist Church, and was preceded in death by his wife, Minnie Congress. COVINGTON, Bryan Scott, 24, of Lexington, died Monday, July 22, 1996, at his home. He was born July 12, 1972 in Lexington, a son of Linda Ritchie Covington of Lexington and the late Ronald Chester (Chet) Covington. Bryan was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, and worked for Rennies. Surviving in addition to his mother are his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Olin Ri tchie, Dayton; paternal grandmother, Mildred C. Anderson, Buena Vista; paternal great-grandmother, Grace C. CRIDLIN, Ratcliffe White, 81, of Goode, died Monday, July 22, 1996, in a local nursing home. He was born in Hanover County on September 7, 1914, a son of the late Ransdel Chiles Cridlin, Sr. and Sallie Hockaday Cridlin. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ransdel Chiles Cridlin, Jr. and WIlliam Gregory Cridlin. He was a graduate of New London Academy and was a retired dairy far mer. Mr. Cridlin was a Army Veteran of World War II and a member of Terrace View Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Anne Downing Brown Cridlin; eight nephews; and one niece. Funeral services will be conducted at the graveside in Greenwood Cemetery at 2 p.m., Wednesday, July 24, 1996 with the Rev. David M. Schrock officiating. GOODALE, Eleanor Barnhart, 82, of Roanoke, formerly of Pleasant Unity, Pennsylvania, passed away Tuesday, July 23, 1996. She was the widow of Edward E. Goodale. Mr. Goodale accompanied Admiral Richard E. Byrd on his 1928 expedition to discover Antarctica and the South Pole. Mrs. Goodale was in the First Unit activated in the U.S. Naval WAVES during World War II. She was a graduate of Seton Hill College (Greensburg, Penn.), Class of 1937, and was retired from the U.S. Department of the Interior. Mrs. Goodale was a member of Raleigh Court United Methodist Church in Roanoke. She was preceded in death by her parents, Scott K. and Cora Truxal Barnhart; five brothers, David, Alex, Lynn, Everett, and John Barnhart; and three sisters, Dorothy Barnhart, Genevieve B. Taylor and Mary Barnhart. Surviving are a brother, William J. Barnhart, Latrobe, Penn; a sister, Margaret L. Barnhart, Nashville, Tenn.; and a number of nieces and nephews. Burial will take place in Winterport, Maine. The family suggest memorial contributions be made to Raleigh Court United Methodist Church, 1706 Grandin Rd., S.W., Roanoke, Va. 24015. JONES, Rebecca Joyce, of Philadelphia, Pa., formerly of Goode, departed this life Sunday, July 21, 1996, at Einstein Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa. Born in Bedford County, she was a daughter of Mrs. Susan Williams and the late Norvel Bryant. She was a graduate of Susie Gibson High School, and an employee of the United States Postal Service as an MDO supervisor since 1967. In addition to her mother, she is survived by her devoted companion, Harry David (Andy) Anderson; and a son, Harry David Jones, both of Philadelphia; five brothers and their spouses, Leo Woolfolk of Bedford, Eddie Bryant and his wife, Mildred, of Greensboro, N.C., Freddie Bryant and his wife, Linda, of Goode, Roy Bryant and his wife, Patricia, of Richmond, and Todd Bryant and his wife, Fay, of Lynchburg; nine sisters, Reba Bryant and her husband, Howard, of Roanoke, Sarah Tyler and her husband, Lynda Green and her husband, Rob, all of Richmond, Verna Bryant of Philadelphia, Pa., Gail Rhodes and Emily Fuqua, both of Goode, Mabel Burrell of Bedford, Gertrude Cobbs of Alexandria, and Evelyn Bryant and her husband, Woody, of Buchanan; one aunt, Mrs. Ruby Page of Lynchburg; one uncle, Roy Bryant of Goode; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Dorothy, Ellen, and Helen; and a brother, Bobby. A memorial service will be held Thursday at noon from Baker Funeral Home in Philadelphia with Rev. Carl Hutcherson Jr. officiating. Funeral se rvices will be conducted Saturday at 1 p.m. from St. Paul Baptist Church with Rev. Verenander Hughes and Rev. Carl Hutcherson Jr. officiating, with interment in the church cemetery. She will lie in state at St. Paul Baptist Church for one hour prior to the service. The cortege will assemble at Route 2, Goode, at 12:15 p.m. Services are entrusted to the care of Carl B. McGUFFIN, Joseph Richard, (``Joe""), of Blue Ridge, went to be with his Lord, on the night of Monday, July 22, 1996. He was born June 3, 1919. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Margaret C. McGuffin; son, Joseph W. McGuffin and family, Judy, Clacie, and Lea Ann; daughters, Linda Milton and family, Henry and Eddie, Martha Hartley and Walter Hartley, Sally McGuffin and Robert Br inkley; sister-in-law, Lois McGuffin; two nephews, Dr. Robert McGuffin and Dr. Richard McGuffin. RIGNEY, Lillie Elizabeth, 82, of Rocky Mount, died Monday, July 22, 1996. She was born December 25, 1913, a daughter of the late George and Addie Hodges. She was a member of Henry Fork Church of the Brethren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Sam S. Rigney Sr., two sons, Charles Rigney and William Rigney, one granddaughter, Sandra Rigney, one sister, Annie Mae Holloway, and three brothers, Arthur, Dalton, and Cabel Hodges. WALKER, Rev. Dr. Norvane S., born in Washington, D.C. on July 27, 1912, the only son of the late Oscar W. Walker and the late Mary W. Walker, departed this life on Monday evening, July 22, 1996 in Lynchburg General Hospital. Norvane received public and high school education in Washington, D.C. and many years ago, he matriculated at Virginia Seminary and College, completing graduate courses in Church History and Religion after a period of six years. His public career has been long and varied, consisting of pastorates at five churches, Spring Hill Baptist Church in Brookneal, Va., First Baptist Church in South Lynchburg, Va., Rising Sun Baptist Church in Monroe, Va., Altha Grove Baptist Church in Forest, Va. and Holcomb Rock Baptist Church on Boonsboro Road in Lynchburg, Va. His occupational experience includes employment as Community Worker at the Lynchbur

g Community Action Group, assistant in the Meals on Wheels Program and Associate Director of the Senior Citizens Program, as well as the Foster Grandparent Program. Norvane is a member of the Lynchburg Minister Baptist Conference, the Lynchburg Chapter of the NAACP and the American Academy of Ministry. He was been a delegate to the Virginia State Baptist Convention for many years, past Moderator for the peaks of Otter Baptist Association and is a former member of the Advisory Board of Central Virginia Agency on Aging. Norvane S. Walker's life objective was to respect, love and promote mankind, regardless of race, culture or relegion. He is survive d by a cousin, Bronella Allen; a brother-in-law, Emerson Johnson, both of Washington, D.C; a god-son, Tajah Franklin, Lynchburg; and other friends. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday at Holcomb Rock Baptist Church with the Rev. Fred Harris officiating. the Rev. AllennBridges will be eulogist, with interment in the church cemetery. His remains may be viewed one hour prior to services.
