NEW RIVER VALLEY PEOPLE

The June meeting of the Southside Garden Club was held at the home of Margaret Stoekle. Blue ribbons for floral artistic design were awarded to Joyce Beliveau, Norma Bunnell and Donna Ludwig for their "Tying the Knot" designs.

Darlene Simpson won a blue ribbon for her design, "Herbal Delight." Blue ribbons for horticulture were awarded to Joyce Beliveau, Susan Caceci, Donna Ludwig, Darlene Simpson and Layel Zelazney.

The club, dedicated to education, beautification and conservation concerns, is a local chapter of the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs.

The Area 4-H Contest held at New River Community College on May 18 resulted in blue and purple ribbons for Montgomery County 4-H'ers. First place overall winners in the 9-11 age category are: Tiffany Poole, in child care; Shane Cox, in hobbies; and Dwayne Link, in small animals. Blue ribbon winners are: Margeaux Boles, in small animals; Dannette Travis, in dog care; Luke Marshall, in photography; and Amanda Parker, in dance. Tracy Christensen received a red ribbon in photography.

First-place overall winners in the 12-13 age category was Charles Hagedorn, in photography. Blue ribbon winners were: Jennifer Link, in fabric painting; Amanda Huff, in breads and cereals.

The Montgomery County Boychoir finished first in its category of Treble E and first overall at the "Musicale" competition at Busch Gardens' Royal Palace Theatre in Williamsburg last month.

Twenty-one middle and high-school choirs, orchestras and bands competed. Participants from Montgomery County Boychoir were: Alex Altizer, Kyle Bailey, Drew Barr, J. W. Beamer, Konstantin Brazhnik, Michael Bucy, Scott Call, Sean Couch, Jared Cox, Mitchel Crawford, Mark David, Roddy DeHart, Jonathan Hunter, Bryan Kessinger, Chris Price, Andy Reach , David Rhinesmith, Stephen Shelburne, Benjamin Smith, Adam Thompson, Cory Thompson, Ross Thompson, Ben Tinker and Ron Williams. Lynn Whitescarver, of Christiansburg Middle School, led the group.

The New River Valley Health District and Virginia Cooperative Extension offer a six-hour course designed for persons who serve and sell food to the public at temporary events and festivals. More than 100 New River Valley residents have been certified since January.

In June, 25 people were certified after completing the course taught in Pulaski. They are: Edith Trail, Peggy Jarrells, Laura Hoffman, Patricia C. Angle, B.J. Angle, Thomas M. Crockett, Mildred F. Jones, John Henley, Dorothy Henley, Cindy Foster, Margaret Mitchell, Shirley Simpkins, Russell Simpkins, Dolly Banes, Delphine Banes, Opal Crawford, Debby Clark, Virginia Akers, Mary McCoy, Mary Whitlock, Elizabeth Bowden, Donna Gray, Lala Tracy, Judy Peterson and Linda Callahan.

In May, 27 people were certified after completing the course taught in Giles County. They are: Linda Carol Morris, Stella K. Davis, M. Douglas Martin, June Chaney, Betty Wheeler, Sheffie Godfrey, Vivian Atwood, Rhodessa Riddle, Jacqueline L. King, Sandra Stafford, Annie Jane Spangler, Rebecca S. Bouldin, H. G. Gillespie, Karen L. Clark, Barbara T. Spangler, Bertha Talbert, Edith Ganoe, Barbara E. Palmer, Cora E. Stafford, Terry L. Everett, John R. Everett, Brenda Kuhta, Cecil Hatcher, Deborah K. Carbaugh, Fern Echols, Veronica Lester and Jean C. Wills.

In March, the course was taught in Riner. Those certified were Eileen Wagner, Sue Vernon, Ernest D. Kaufman, Barbara Griffiths, Jan Politis, Norma Bull, Nathan Tannenbaum, William S. Dobbins, Cheryl Hudgins, Katherine L. Smith, J. Patrick Smith and Henry Sink.

The Alpha Lambda Chapter of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International celebrated Founder's Day on May 18 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Pearisburg.

At the April meeting, certificates were presented to Ruth Harman, Louise Horn and Lila Lorton for their 25 years of membership in the society. Virginia Deal Laurence was honored for her 35 years as the chapter's treasurer.

Members of the Montgomery 4-H Livestock Club exhibited their project animals at the Roanoke Area Junior Livestock Show in May. Brad Donaldson, Justin Whittier, Shane Whittier, Kelly McKinnon, Sarah Graybeal, Travis Donaldson, Lori McKinnon and Cherise Whitter participated in the show.
