In response to the TWA disaster, United Airlines said Wednesday it will require two forms of identification from anyone checking small packages, and might not let domestic flights take off if the person who checked a bag isn't on board.
The airline also won't accept small packages without opening them first and will increase spot searches of bags on international trips.
The new security measures were being imposed without any orders from the Federal Aviation Administration, UAL President John Edwardson said.
Other airlines said they had increased security but did not give details. TWA also said it has heightened security because of Wednesday's explosion of Flight 800, which killed all 230 people aboard. |- Associated Press
