One of three men wounded in a shootout that killed a 7-year-old girl was charged Wednesday with one count of malicious wounding, police said.
Lamario Cooper, 25, of Norfolk, is accused of shooting one of the two other men, police spokeswoman Amber Whittaker said.
Cooper was being held in the Portsmouth jail, said Lt. Elizabeth Aronson of the Portsmouth Sheriff's Office.
Whittaker said Cooper was treated at a hospital after the shootout, but she did not know the nature of his injuries.
Police continued to investigate, and additional charges may be filed, Whittaker said.
The shootout occurred Monday night in a two-story house converted into apartments.
Blanca H. Garcia, 7, of Norfolk, hid in a bathroom upstairs when the shooting began. When she walked out of the bathroom, one of the men fired toward the front door, hitting her in the neck, police said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
