NAVY PETTY OFFICER 2ND CLASS MATTHEW W. BEARD, son of retired Navy Chief Warrant Officer and Mrs. Marshall D. Beard of Roanoke, has returned to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, after completing a six-month deployment to the Persian Gulf. While aboard the USS Port Royal, Beard took part in enforcing the United Nations' sanctions against Iraq, relieving the USS Independence in the East China Sea. He also participated in exercises with forces from Japan and Pakistan.
Beard is a 1990 graduate of Northside High School.
PETTY OFFICER 2ND CLASS VICKIE N. VALENTINO, daughter of William G. Nunley and Joyce K. Holdren of Roanoke, recently received the Joint Service Commendation Medal. Valentino was cited for meritorious service while serving with a U.S. Armed Forces joint task force or multi-service command.
The 1980 graduate of William Fleming High School is currently assigned at Naval Security Group Activity in Misawa, Japan.
ENSIGN JONATHAN E. WILLIS, son of Edward L. and Joyce P. Willis of Roanoke, recently graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., and was commissioned to his present rank in the U.S. Navy. He received a bachelor of science degree with a major in oceanography.
Willis is a 1989 graduate of Cave Spring High School.
AIRMAN NELSON A. PENDLETON, son of Gary A. Pendleton of Thaxton and Angela D. Pendleton of Vinton, has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.
Pendleton is a 1990 graduate of Liberty High School.
