The Rev. Dr. Julianne L. Hollingsworth, who was reared in the Second Presbyterian Church congregation, will become the full-time interim associate pastor there effective Aug. 5. A former minister of Virginia Presbyterian Church at Buchanan and director of Roanoke Area Ministries, Hollingsworth has most recently held part-time pastoral care positions with the Roanoke Valley Pastoral Counseling Center and Our Lady of the Valley retirement home. She is a graduate of Union Theological Seminary in Richmond and recently received a doctorate from McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago.
The Rev. Donald Roberts, pastor of South Roanoke United Methodist Church, will attend the three-week World Methodist Conference in Rio de Janeiro. Accompanied by several family members, Roberts will be away from Aug. 2 to 22. The council, which meets every five years, includes representatives from 71 Methodist-related denominations in 107 countries. Roberts, who has been to two previous meetings of the group, is now on its 500-member World Methodist Council. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOLS

An Olympics theme, "Go for the Goal," will be featured at many Southern Baptist Bible schools, including that of Salem Baptist Church. Its school, for children 4 through 10, will be in session Monday through Aug. 2 from 9 a.m. to noon. Free organ recitals, sponsored on Sunday afternoons at 3 by the Roanoke Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, will continue through Aug. 25. Nancy Delaney will perform at Christ Lutheran Church Sunday. Future sites are Greene Memorial United Methodist on Aug. 4; Calvary Baptist on Aug. 11; Grandin Court Baptist on Aug. 18; and First Presbyterian on the final Sunday, when brass instruments will be included. Loyola University's three-year ministry formation program for Roman Catholics and other interested lay Christians is open for registration. Study groups are expected to begin meeting in the Roanoke Valley in late November. The classes originating at the New Orleans university lead to a continuing education certificate or a master's degree for leadership on a parish staff. Healing damaged emotions is the goal of an 11-week study, "When I Grow Up, I Want To Be an Adult," beginning with an introductory session Aug. 18 at 6 p.m. at Parkway Wesleyan Church, 3230 King St. N.E. Fred Anderson, executive director of the Virginia Baptist Historical Society, will speak Sunday at 11 a.m. at the site of the old Painter Chapel on Catawba Road in Botetourt County. The union chapel was used by Protestant groups nearly 200 years ago, but the original building has disappeared. Recently, the Catawba Valley Baptist men's group, whose present building is near the site, cleared it and erected a marker in honor of pioneer residents who worshiped there. Rain site will be Catawba Valley Church.
Mount Moriah Baptist Church, 3521 Orange Ave. N.E., has scheduled homecoming Sunday beginning at 11 a.m. Lunch follows at 1 with an afternoon service starting at 3. Guest worship leaders will be the Rev. Thomas A. Woods and the choir of Bethlehem Baptist Church.
Homecoming activities will begin Sunday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church on Reservoir Road, Hollins. Guest speaker will be the Rev. Braxton Broady, a former Roanoker now of Charleston, W.Va.
The Presbyterian Community Center, which is entering into a new cooperative program with several Southeast Roanoke congregations, has scheduled an open house Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. Its building at 1228 Jamison Ave. S.E., soon will undergo renovation.
Jerusalem Baptist Church, 1014 Norfolk Ave. S.W., is celebrating the 14th anniversary of the coming of the Rev. J. Eugene Young as pastor. Leading worship tonight will be the Rev. E.T. Burton of Sweet Union Baptist and on Friday the Rev. Johnny Stone of Hill Street Baptist. Both services start at 7. Guest on Sunday at 4 p.m. will be the Rev. J.D. Holland and the choir of Lovely Zion Baptist Church.
