HAYES, SEAY, MATTERN & MATTERN INC., a Roanoke-based architectural, engineering and planning firm, has been named to the "Fantastic Fifty" list of the fastest growing companies in Virginia by Virginia Business magazine and the accounting firm of Coopers & Lybrand. The award was presented by Gov. George Allen.
STEEL SERVICES INC., a Richmond-based steel distributor with an office in Roanoke, recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. The company was founded in 1946 by Thomas J. Starke, who also was president of Richmond Engineering Corp.
ELLEN V. WADE, who is employed with Carilion Health System's Nutrition Services, has become certified as a Fellow of The American Dietetic Association.
JUNE LIGHT has joined Barrows, an office furniture and equipment store in Roanoke, as administrative assistant. Light previously was employed by H & H X-Ray Inc. and has more than 20 years of sales and customer service experience.
VICKIE L. STURGILL of Roanoke has completed a course in diamonds with the Santa Monica, Calif.-based Gemological Institute of America and has been awarded the institute's Diamonds certificate.
WILLIAM G. SMITH, formerly of Roanoke, has been promoted to vice president, business planning and development, for Gulf States Paper Corp.'s paperboard converting division in Tuscaloosa, Ala. He joined Gulf States in 1991 as marketing manager for the paperboard converting division. Before that, he worked for Westvaco Corp.
Smith attended Cave Spring High School.
MELISSA DIANE NICKELS and LEE ANN NECESSARY, both of Roanoke, have been named 1995-1996 Young Careerists by Roanoke Business and Professional Women's Club and Valley Network Business and Professional Women's Club. Nickels is a chiropractic assistant at the Roanoke Chiropractic Clinic in Roanoke. Necessary is the news anchor for WSLS-TV in Roanoke.
JANET C. BOYST, a Roanoke native, has been elected group executive of Wachovia Operational Services Corp. in Winston-Salem, N.C., where she is manager of electronic payment systems in the commercial services group. She joined Wachovia in 1977.
GAIL G. GODSEY has been honored by Safeguard Business Systems at its sales kickoff meeting in Nashville, Tenn. A distributor of Safeguard products for 26 years, Godsey is one of 22 distributors in North America to be a member of the company's Masters Club.
CLAUDE GRANDY of Moore's Lumber & Building Supplies in Salem has been named the 1995 Rookie of the Year by the Roanoke Regional Home Builders Association. Grandy has been employed for two years in Moore's outside contractor sales division. The award recognizes the outstanding efforts of a member during the first year of membership in the association.
JERRY MAYHUE of Valley Rich Dairy in Roanoke was inducted into the Carolina/Virginia Dairy Products Association "25-ers Club" during an awards ceremony recently held at the Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center in conjunction with the association's annual convention. Mayhue was recognized for his experience and contributions to the dairy industry over a 25-year period.
THEODORE E. LONG, who was an instructor and assistant professor of sociology at Hollins College from 1970 to 1980, has been named president of Elizabethtown College in Elizabethtown, Pa. Long goes to his new position from Merrimack College in North Andover, Mass., where he was provost and vice president for academic affairs.
While at Hollins, he was chairman of the sociology department in 1974 and 1975.
SUSAN L. WOOLRIDGE, formerly of Roanoke, has been promoted to assistant vice president, commercial portfolio management information, at First Union National Bank in Charlotte, N.C. Woolridge worked for Dominion Bankshares Corp. from 1987 to 1993.
JEFF GUILLIAMS and JOSEPH HOLCOMB, United Van Lines operators for Lawrence Transportation Systems in Roanoke, have received "Safe Driving and Excellent Performance" awards. Guilliams has been with Lawrence for 16 years, and Holcomb has been with the company for 11 years.
STEPHEN M. POWELL, son of Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey Powell of Roanoke, has been elected assistant vice president of Wachovia Bank of North Carolina in Winston-Salem. He is a training coordinator in the mortgage banking services group.
