ICY RECEPTION: It's unlikely that's what you'll get when you meet the new Miss Virginia, Michelle Kang, at an ice cream social Sunday 2-3:30 p.m. at the Park Oak Grove Retirement Community. Guests will be treated to classical piano selections by Kang, as well as make-your-own ice cream sundaes. Call 989-9501.

STAYING POWER: Rolling Stone magazine says that Maurice Williams & The Zodiacs' one minute, 37-second recording of "Stay" is the shortest No. 1 single in pop music history. Still, the song has earned induction into the "Million Airs Club" for having been broadcast over a million times since it was recorded in 1960. Williams and the Zodiacs will be at Valleypointe After Hours, Valleypointe Corporate Center, North Roanoke County, Thursday at 5:30 p.m. No beverages, coolers or picnic baskets. $3 adults, children under 12 free. ROAD SHOW: Virginia natives The Vandangos have been on the road this past year honing their sound for their second CD (currently untitled), which is tentatively set for an early January release. LIKE BIKES? The fifth annual Shenandoah Valley Bike Festival promises scenic vistas and fitting challenges for all levels of cyclists. The event will be held today through Sunday on the campus of Bridgewater College in Bridgewater. New this year are two mountain bike rides in the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests (register for those by 9:30 a.m. Saturday). For schedule specifics, call 434-3862.

ABINGDON GEORGIA: Dancers from the Republic of Georgia will appear in pre-Virginia Highlands Festival performances Monday and Tuesday at the Barter Theatre in Abingdon. Gurdgiani, featuring as many as 24 performers, will present an ensemble of dance and song. Shows are at 8 p.m., with first seating on Monday going to festival patrons. Tickets cost $10. The troupe also will lead international dance workshops for children at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Wednesday at Abingdon Elementary School. Admission is $1 at the door. Call 623-5266 or (800) 435-3440.
