Today, in Mattoon, Ill., Lender's Bagel Bakery is rolling in the dough. During the World's Biggest Bagel Breakfast, hosted by the maker of normally 2-ounce bagels, Lender's will debut a 550 pounder - 6 feet wide, almost 2 feet high with a one-foot hole in the center.
Lender's hopes it will be one for the books, Guinness, that is, breaking the record by 100 pounds.
Mathematically speaking, it would take 1,760 5-ounce bagels from Five-Boro Bagels on the Roanoke City Market to equal Lender's baked behemoth.
In order to qualify for Guinness, the giant bagel must be prepared normally, meaning it has to be boiled before its baked.
The bubbling cauldron at Five-Boro Bagels is ``big enough to make a 10-pound bagel,'' owner Hal Stern said. ``The toughest part would be getting it out of the kettle filled with boiling water.''
Either Lender's has a crane handy or the company has figured out how to really make dough rise.
Now, if you wanted to spread cream cheese a quarter-inch thick across a 6-foot bagel...
