Corey Moore, a defensive end from Holmes (Miss.) Junior College, said he has rejected overtures from Arizona State and Tennessee and will be at Virginia Tech for the start of preseason football practice Aug. 10.
Moore, a 6-foot, 215-pounder, played at Haywood High School in Brownsville, Tenn., before signing with Mississippi following the 1994 season.
Mississippi subsequently went through a coaching change and, when an effort was made to persuade Moore to enroll for the second semester, he elected to go to junior college.
Moore, who had a 3.9 grade-point average in high school and a 4.0 GPA at Holmes, will have three years of eligibility at Tech.
``I was contacted by [Tech's] new defensive line coach, Charlie Wiles,'' said Moore, 19. ``We go back a ways, from when he was at Murray State. He wanted me when I was in high school, but I wanted to play [Division] I-A.''
Murray State has a I-AA program, but when Tech lost defensive-line coach Todd Grantham to Michigan State, the Hokies went after Wiles. He previously had served as a graduate assistant at Tech from 1986-87.
Moore, who ranked fourth in his graduating class in high school, visited Duke and Pennsylvania, but did not get a big recruiting push until this summer. He visited Arizona State and recently was contacted by Tennessee, which had a scholarship open.
``Earlier they had told me they weren't recruiting any more players at my position,'' Moore said. ``When I heard from them again, I had already decided that Tech was the place for me.''
